The Lyrics

In 2005-06, NBC, broadcaster of Notre Dame football home games since 1991, became the NHL network television partner. Since then, the Pittsburgh Penguins have won the Stanley Cup three times. Each of the first two times have been followed by a non-bowl season for the Fighting Irish - a 6-6 season in which ND sat out voluntarily in 2009 after a 4-game losing streak to end the season resulting in Charlie Weis' dismissal, and a 4-8 season in 2016 after which Brian Kelly was still retained which many Notre Dame fans criticized (I think even NBC has been dissatisfied with ND's performance over the years of the relationship, looking to bail if the national title drought isn't ended by the end of the current contract in 2025). If convention holds true, Notre Dame could be looking at another poor performance in 2017.
I fear for old Notre Dame
The Penguins have won the Cup again
That mean trouble is brewing
Another season of losing
We will not go to a game of bowl
For Notre Dame will lose to them all
History will repeat self
Onward now to defeat

All of Notre Dame's bad luck in the past twenty years can be attributed to bad karma. The football gods still haven't forgiven Notre Dame for playing for a tie against Michigan State, knowing that they had one more game against Southern Cal where they could run up the score and overawe the pollsters. Apparently, the gods of football no likee that. Hearken to the words of the Prophet Herman ... You play to WIN. THE GAME. Hello! You PLAY .. to win the game

^^BTW, about two-thirds of me is half-Irish, so I can get away with saying that. Besides, my dad was a ND fanatic who actually jetted over to LA at the last minute to see Notre Dame lambaste Southern Cal, 51-0. He even dragooned my mother to go along with him. According to Mom, the two of them were seated in the highest nosebleed row in the entire damn Coliseum; she said the players on the field looked like ants milling around an anthill. But of course Dad enjoyed every shameful moment of this exercise in bad sportsmanship. To this day, Mom cant talk about this without rolling her eyes upward 360 degrees in her eye sockets

So who will replace Kelly if they do have another non-Bowl season? Sabin, Meyer and Harbaugh definitely will not leave their cushy jobs, but those are the only coaches who could turn them into a contender again. I don't see any hope for ND unless they play Purdue the entire season, which will never happen.

Don't forget Jim Tressel. He resurrected Ohio State years ago and deserves a shot at redemption for how things ended for him there.
