The Lyrics

You may find this a bit ironic, but the original song became rather famous as part of a series called "Sharp's Rifles." You see, the series starred a young actor by the name of Sean Bean. He would later play Boromir in "Fellowship of the Ring."
Gather up all ye forces now.
A pledge and oath o' ye hath sworn.
For Rohan must fight the foe today.
To Minith Tirith far away.

O' Rohirrim ride forth today.
To Pelennor field without delay.
King Theoden commands and we obey.
To Minith Tirith far away.

Fight the forces of dark and gloom.
To face the terror and the doom.
Ye must never scream and run away.
To Minith Tirith far away.

O' Rohirrim ride forth today.
To Pelennor field without delay.
King Theoden commands and we obey.
To Minith Tirith far away.

If Orcs should chop and cleave me up
Or that a warg should eat me up.
Then so be it lads come what may.
To Minith Tirith far away.

O' Rohirrim ride forth today.
To Pelennor field without delay.
King Theoden commands and we obey.
To Minith Tirith far away.

So fall in lads behind your King,
fight the forces behind the ring.
Is that a Nazgul in my way?
To Minith Tirith far away.

Good content, didn't know the original (I'm betting quite a few didn't)

I remember the 'Sharpe' series -it was one of my brother's favourite programmes. The traditional tunes were performed by John Tams, formerly of the Home Service.

Hi Pickle! Richard Sharp and company were incredible to watch. The characters in that series were some of the most original and endearing personalities I've had the pleasure to watch. I've been told that the books are even better, but I just don't have the time to read them. I'm glad this song brought back some memories for you.

Hi Jeff! You may have a point that few people may have heard the original, but still, I'd rather have that, then rework a song that has been redone too many times. Besides, this was a bit of a flash of inspiration, a spur of the moment if you will. If you wish to listen to the original here is the link http://www.isambarde.co.uk/fullsongs/01%20Over%20The%20Hills%20And%20Far%20Away.mp3

Here is the link to the original lyrics I referenced my song to. http://www.mcabee.org/~lcm/lyrics/hills.html

Apparently the link I gave for the mp3 of the original song does not work. So here is the home page where the song can be found. Just click on "Over The Hills And Far Away." The song is 4 mb so if you do not have a fast connection, then I suggest looking at the link that has just the lyrics. http://www.isambarde.co.uk/press_pack.htm

I think this is an excellent piece of well written work and with your permission I will be putting it on my site, obviously with your name on it. John Tams version of 'Over the hills and far away' is actually an adapted version of the original English folk song, which predated the Napoleonic era but he, like yourself, did an excellent job of it. Sharpe was fantastic and has a bit of a cult following in America now days. Sean Bean is one of the best actors from the UK in my opinion, he's been great in everything he's done, whether it was playing Richard Sharpe in 'Sharpe', or playing Spence in 'Ronin' or playing Boromir in TLOTR. Keep up the good work.
