The Lyrics

i left out the parts sung by the chorus - basically because in the version of the lyrics i used just the major general's lines were used.
Well American Idol creates stars that are ephemeral
They'll have their fame for a bit then we will all forget 'em all
Similar shows in England result in the same nightmarish fates
We'll soon forget about will young and the same goes for Gareth Gates
From years of vocal training they have ample skills for belting tunes
And they are all good-looking, the guys make young girls melt and swoon
They have their fifteen minutes of fame but they don't stay around
When was the last time that a "pop top 40" station played O-Town?
No one will care about the band that P. Diddy is gonna make
It seems that S Club 7 now has been replaced by s club 8
That manufactured band will soon prove to be forgettable
Shows like that one called "idol" create stars that are ephemeral

It starts with sixties history there was a group with Davy Jones
Those Monkees songs stopped selling when the TV ceased to play their show
I don't know about you but I am quite over that Eden's Crush
And on the US charts that band Westlife has not been seen too much
But now their song is being sung by that Ruben with the belly
Who looks like he has eaten a lot of reubens from the deli
And he must lose a few pounds cause his looks border on revoltingness
But he won't do that so he'll end up where Michael Bolton is
Clay Aiken has some writing skill but he still needs to work on it
Justin Guarini released a single but no one's heard of it
For sure the way this kind of thing tends to work in general
Is that programs like "idol" create stars that are forgettable

They sing songs we've all heard before; they lack originality
And even worse it seems they all are lacking personality
Well you can ask Madonna who has always had her purse be full
That it will help your image when you're somewhat controversial
Although they fill their pockets a whole lot more than the average guy
If they don't change their tactics then they'll soon be gone like Hammertime
Maybe if I did researching this song might be more accurate
If you don't like this maybe you should jump in a big arachnid pit
Now this song is getting longish unlike certain teen idol's careers
Who will perform about as well as the Chicago Bulls' careers
They'll have a quarter hour of fame and then we will forget 'em all
Shows like that one called "idol" create stars that are ephemeral
ok i got a little lazy at the end

Quite timely in that Pop Idol has just started up again at the time of writing!

ephemeral?
Tone-Def - August 11, 2003 - Report this comment
ephemeral is the opposite of long lasting

Oh, ok...I only watch "Big Red" gum commericals, so thats why I dont know that word

...hey, where did my comment go? Must have forgotten to hit the "submit" button. But I've just tried voting again, and the vote didn't register so I guess it took when I voted yesterday... anyway - nice one, TD: it's a fun song to parody, isn't it?

...and what brought me back: Billy: ephemeral means here and gone in a day, e.g. insects order "ephemeroptera" contains the mayflies (genus ephemera), which only last a day. Very appropriate to some of today's manufactured teenypops

its also a very difficult song to parody
Phil - August 13, 2003 - Report this comment
It's not that difficult, TD: you just need to get the rhythm of the lines going, and there are so many syllables in each line, you can usually rephrase it to scan. Did you try doing this on lyric alone, or did you listen to the original?

I guess I voted on this one already; really well done, esp. little details like "over that Eden's Crush". Anyway, a few more votes would make more sense.
Tone-Def - August 14, 2003 - Report this comment
I wrote it just looking at the lyrics but i'm a little familiar with the original (and even more familiar with the elements song by tom lehrer) And more votes generally wouldmake sense for my songs but they don't seem to come
