The Lyrics

I've been having a running dialog with an Aryan chick on YouTube who posted a poorly paced version of her idea of an American Horst Wessel Lied (Nazi marching song). I rewrote her version, not to change the message, but to at least make it possible to sing (and march to). She didn't seem to care for it. While researching the song, and listening to her version repeatedly, I had the tune stuck in my head. One night, I woke up with a stomach ache and these words came to me. I think it is as good as most of my parodies, but I don't want to write another one that way again. Fernando is probably ABBA's best song. (Their best composition is the instrumental "Arrival"). It is a song about love, war, youth, and idealism. Set in the Mexican Revolution (some say Spanish Civil War) two survivors reminisce about their younger days and the things they fought for, and won, or lost. Probably the guys who marched to Die Fahne Hoch in 1935 were thinking something similar in 1945.
The drums, the drums, are beating now, Fernando
Do you recall that night so long ago?
Round campfires 'neath the stars we pledged our sacred honor
The price we'd pay, we had no way to know

Round campfires 'neath the stars we pledged our sacred honor
The price we'd pay, we had no way to know

The rifles' crack, the distant cannons' booming
The fire of youth was burning in our blood
Beyond the wire the hated foe in shadows looming
We'd pass the test, or lie beneath the mud

Beyond the wire the hated foe in shadows looming
We'd pass the test, or lie beneath the mud

We told ourselves, "We're fighting for our freedom.
Prosperity, and better days ahead".
The deeds we do, will future generations read them?
Or will they fall, forgotten with the dead?

The deeds we do, will future generations read them?
Or will they fall, forgotten with the dead?

We're old and grey, it's time for reminiscing
The guns and swords to rust have long decayed
We're filled with pride, but does it feel there's something missing?
The compromises to the plans we made

We're filled with pride, but does it feel there's something missing?
The compromises to the plans we made
