Song Parodies -> "Math-y Man"

Original Song Title:

"Handy Man"

Original Performer:

Jimmie Jones / James Taylor

Parody Song Title:

"Math-y Man"

Parody Written by:

Tommy Turtle

The Lyrics

Off of sheep, and on to geek!
Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ, Σ -- Σ [1]
"A", "a, "a"

Hey nerds, gather 'round
Pick up on what I now propound
Hey, beanies, I'm your math-y man

Yes, I'm the kind who used to use a slide rule
Or do it in my head like Leonhard "Eul" [2]
I Æ'(x) broken proofs; you know I really can

You want theorems smart? And brilliance rare?
I - I'm the man to see
I postulate strings; I Σ(1 + ... + n) [3]
+ √ℯ (- ℯ - ℯ - ℯ)

Here is the main thing I want to say:
I'm clearly cleverer than Tycho "Brahe" [2]
I hy-pothesize; Cogito ergo sum

If René Descartes should need a pair,
Co-or-di-nate with me
x,y: analyze; I'm anally wise
Probability: p (-ℯ-ℯ-ℯ)

Here is the main thing I do for play:
I watch Miss Möbius strip every day [3.14159...]
I fix broken Hz; I know I truly can

Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ, Σ -- Σ
"A", "a, "a"
Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ, Σ -- Σ
"A", "a, "a"
(fade)
That's I [Δ]
I'm your math-y man

[1] read, "Sum-a"... etc.
[2] May the dead white mathematician and astronomer forgive me for mangling their names horribly for the sake of rhyme.
[3] read, "I sum 1 to n, plus the square root of e".
[3.14159...] Hope this line doesn't seem too one-sided.
[Δ] OS line is "That's me", but parody character speaks as a true geek would.

Brilliant on so many levels! My fav of the day by far...mobius strip the cleverest, IMO, but every line, er, um, rhyming theorm, a winner... you are terrific prolific and scientific!

alvin and TJC, thanks.

I'm no good at math, but I'm pretty sure this one adds up to 15.

Wow--talk about head spinning. . .that was a funny and confusing parody all at the same time. . .Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ-a, Σ, Σ -- Σ . . .based on the sub note--That's Sum-a? Wow. . .a lot of work on this one.[Δ] OS line is "That's me", but parody character speaks as a true geek would.---Well anyway--I think that this character would speak every line like a true geek, all 5s

Holy frick! I loved the word play with "I fix broken Hz". The rest made me feel kinda dumb, so I have to vote you 1 (+1 + 1...15) (I know I butchered that expression, but you get the (decimal) point). =)

AFW, Below Average Dave, thanks.

Red Ant, the limited parsing here messed up another visual gag: in line 6, "I fix broken proofs...", there was supposed to be the curvy "f" symbol used for "function": "I f(x) broken..." but it came out a question mark, at least on my browser. Looked fine in the "preview' pane.
I emailed CG asking if I could use italics for "x", "y", and "p" as is usually done in math, but there was no response. Thanks for v/c.... if you'd like to "get" a geek gag, look up "mobius strip" in Wikipedia.
Red Ant - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
Well, I do know what a Mobius strip is. =) As for "Æ’" (if it works here), copy/paste is better than using entities. Italics, as well as most other HTML, were disabled a while back - as far as I know, links are the only thing that can be created now.
Red Ant - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
I see "Æ’" works in comments - if you can't see it, try a different browser. The "Æ’" in your parody shows up as a box on my browser (IE).
TT - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
Red Ant, what I don't understand is that the 'Æ’' showed up fine in the preview pane, and the preview says 'Your parody will look *exactly* like this... etc.' In my Firefox browser, there's now a question mark where the Æ’ should be..... Also, the Submission Guidelines say that 'You are permitted to use entity names...' and I used the entity, & fnof ; (without spaces, of course). Don't understand what went wrong -- it killed what I thought was a cute gag, 'I Æ’(x) broken proofs...'
TT(2) - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
Oh, and you were close... the expression you wanted was (1 + 2+... +5) = 15, i.e. "the sum of all of the natural numbers from 1 to 5" which does equal 15.... thanks again :)
Red Ant - September 26, 2007 - Report this comment
Tommy T, entities (whether spelt or numerical) can suffer problems when displayed - the best bet IMHO is to copy/paste the actual character onto a notepad and then transfer it from there. Also, Firefox had some considerable issues here a while back, turning elipses into quotation marks and what not.

Here's the link I use for entities:

http://www.cookwood.com/html/extras/entities.html

I never user the HTML, rather I just copy/paste the symbol from that list.

Jack, that's the same source I use... and used for this. Will try just pasting in the future. Thanks.
