The Lyrics

My accidental series now continues. The three balls, universal symbol for pawn shops, likely come from the coat of arms of the House of Medici. Their power and prominence in the Renaissance derived from trade and banking. ;D

In the tough part of the city
Where sidewalks are covered in trash,
You'll find a shop worn-down and gritty
That trades your possessions for cash.

Three balls displaying
On sign I see.
Their way of saying
"Two to one they'll get me".

I've pawned my watch and my class ring.
I wish they would cut me some slack.
At this rate soon I'll have nothing
Except for the shirt on my back.

Three balls - I'm bleeding.
Hard times, alas!
But I am needing
Money for high-priced gas.

There's certainly no denying
I haven't a nickel to spare.
Still I am not qualifying
To get big federal welfare.

Three balls - bemoan me.
I've hit the skids.
What will they loan me
If I bring in my kids?

If you think the third verse is harsh and overly political, consider the case of my wife. Old Lady Ribber was struggling to support her two desperately ill parents and young neice on a new teacher's salary. The government refused them any assistance because her income (their sole source of sustenance) was above the cut-off point...by five dollars! ;D

Didn't know three balls was a symbol for pawn shops, but a good edition of your number of balls parodies.

This series is going well. How many more balls in the corner pockets? I'm the one who gave you fours. The reason is simply I didn't enjoy this theme as much as the others, and if I just automatically give straight fives all the time, they become meaningless. Hope you don't find that point of view offensive.

Is this series going to be like 'The Twelve Balls of Ribber?' (Oh jeez, how do I always end up saying these things that sound okay when they first pop up in my brain, but look comletely different when they're written out??!)

I can totally relate Ribber, having been in a similar situation myself some years ago. Of course the alternative to pawn shops now are the 'instant payday loan' sharks, who'll happily lend you whatever you want within five minutes of asking - and then equally happily charge you interest rates of 1200% for the privelege. 8^0
