The Lyrics

"And understand this: If American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain when I'm in the White House, I'll put on a pair of comfortable shoes. I'll walk on that picket line with you as President of the United States." - Presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2007. I'm still torn by the events in Wisconsin and I'll try not to judge which side is right or wrong. But...it's amazing how often campaign rhetoric and hyperbole come back to haunt. Hit it, Mr. President. ;D

I promised unions in my last campaign
That I'd in person protest for your gain.
I said I'd picket with you - said it plain.
Because you're mine - I'll walk your line.

About Wisconsin I won't say a single word.
I've other ways to make my message heard,
Although on my proud pledge I have deferred.
Tell the grapevine - I'll walk your line.

Trumpka* contacts the White House ev'ry day.
Stern's** my most frequent guest far and away.
I have their backing. Now their price I'll pay.
'Though I've no sign - I'll walk your line.

But now that I'm the sitting President,
I see that my words weren't quite what I meant.
You've got MoveOn and Mike Moore to foment.***
So don't you whine - that I've no spine.

* = Richard Trumpka, president of the A.F.L. - C.I.O., told the media "I'm at the White House a couple times a week...two, three times a week. I have conversations every day with someone in the White House or in the administration, every day." ** = Andy Stern, head of S.E.I.U., was the President's most frequent White House guest and visitor in 2009-10. *** = Consulting the dictionary, I was surprised to discover that the correct spelling is "foment" rather than "forment" or "ferment". ;D

OMR - Here's a meme to ponder: Over here in the "socialist" Sweden a unions right to go on strike is restricted by laws and regulations calling it the "strike weapon" (my translation). I think rightfully so. But, here's the point, put that "strike weapon" in the American context, shouldn't it be protected by the constituion and be backed by the NRA?
BJM - March 14, 2011 - Report this comment
Very well "organized", OMR! I liked your varied "ine" rhymes, unlike TOS. But with line 5 I disagree; he said at first that the original Wisconsin bill was "an assault on unions."
