The Lyrics

On the night before Halloween in 1938, Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater ensemble put on one of the world's great hoaxes when they broadcast a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds. Twelve million people heard the fake "live news" broadcast, and many were convinced an attack from Mars was underway. The Martian landings were centered around the little-known but real town of Grovers Mill, near Princeton, New Jersey.
Small town Grovers Mill's fame grows
From a lie -
Martians land on a turd of cows near some farmer's sty

Small town Grovers Mill's fame grows
Lies grow too -
And the screams that on air were screamed really did sound true

In Nineteen Thirty Eight a show
Broadcast upon the radio
Was blindly

Accepted as the truth by some
Who thought Martians had really come
And were unkindly

Small town Grovers Mill's fame grows
Through weird lies -
Weird lies over ra-di-o
From that Orson Welles guy

'Twas crappy little rude weird lies said on ra-di-o
By that Orson guy

Thanks, Adagio - I think you might possibly be able to hear Orson Welles' Mercury Theater's "War Of The Words" broadcast on tape or CD .... years ago (back in the 70's, I think, NOT in the 30's, LOL !!) I heard it re-played on the radio, maybe around Halloween, I'm not sure - it was a pretty well-done piece of radio theater.

Out of this world, Paul! I do have the broadcast, and I'm sure it has got to be on CD somewhere. It is radio "theatre of the mind" at its absolute best. Paul you've really earned yourself some 5s . . . and I'm going to get them for you right now . . . they're only about forty yards to my le . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Dude . . . Sorry, Johnny D. I don't know why, but I kept calling you Paul. Take comfort . . . Coulda called you late to dinner. Bit of trivia. While Orson Welles wrapped the final act of the radio drama "War Of The Worlds", he and the cast were being completely surrounded by New York policemen, and being interrogated. You can actually hear the nervousness in his voice as he delivers a possibly off the cuff disclaimer. Welles, who was only about 24 years old at the time, thought his career might be over . . . Far from it, Orson.

Do you remember the movie Invasion From Mars? The 1953 original, not the remake they made later. When I was a little girl, that movie scared me to death!! 5's
Johnny D - March 06, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Jan! I remember "Earth Versus The Flying Saucers", you know, the 1950's movie where humans drove trucks around with radar-dish-antennas in the back that they would point at the saucers to bring them down? I'm not sure if that's the same movie, probably not.
Jack Wilson - March 06, 2004 - Report this comment
Johnny, have ya ever heard any of the "Flying Saucer " break in records by Buchanan and Goodman? theyre great, its like a radio broadcast, but the answers to the questions are lyrics from songs around that time
Johnny D - March 06, 2004 - Report this comment
No, Jack, haven't heard of that. Got any more info?
Jack Wilson - March 07, 2004 - Report this comment
