The Lyrics

There’s a Nip in the air,
But the War Crimes Tribunal
Thinks it’s only fair
There’s a Nip in the air.
So goodbye Tojo-san,
As the top-ranking shogun in wartime Japan,
You’re the show’s leading man.

Oh, guiltless Allies, does he not have a gentle sway?
He’s hanging on to ev’ry verdict we have to say.
Next will come Yamashita?
Hai, hai, but Homma’s sweeter,
Four more will swing and sway much better than Sammy Kaye.
In Tokyo this day,
It is time that you die!
The Rape of Nanking has us say -- a “Banzai!”
Yamashita, Homma sweeter, lose the seat next to St. Peter,
But will meet the Devil’s greeter,
You’ll be in the air.

On the screen, Richard Loo
Played the sneaky Jap captor,
He would say, “It’s true,
I’m a Yankee fan, too.
Went to U.C.R.A.”
That’s the way he would charm us
So that we would say
Where our fleet lay at bay.

Gen’ral Kimura, you remember the Bataan March?
In just five minutes you will lose all your army starch.
And you, Gen’ral Matsui,
Hai, hai, Mr. Matsui,
Your grandson will play outfield
For Steinbrenner’s team called the Yanks.

You’ll twist in the breeze
Like a lynching down South!
It’s too late to beg on your knees.
Shut your mouth!
Yamashita, Homma sweeter, lose the seat next to St. Peter,
But will meet the Devil’s greeter,
You’ll be in the air.

Sammy Kaye was a war-era band leader. The band's catch phrase was "Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye."

Can't believe no comments on this tour-de-armed-force. Perhaps you're just too sophisticated for all of us, Al. Brilliant title switch and, as usual, you hit us with an ancient oldie that deserves a retread every now and then. I have the Allan Jones version (Jack's dad, as I'm sure you know).

Obviously the subject matter has been diligently researched and I'm sure you know more about the wretched protagonists than me. Madame Tojo, who died just last month, insisted to the end that the Imperial war council acted only in defence.

As a long-time resident of Japan, I've gotten to know the people beyond the stereotype and American propaganda, and it brings home to me the inhumanity not of individuals, but of the evil machine and systematic brutalization that is war, and the atrocities it makes ordinary people capable of. In almost every case, all-out conflict could have been avoided and even if initiated, casualties minimized in all sorts of ways. Even the leaders who orchestrate the obscenity have their hands tied by peer pressure, aboard a runaway train to disaster.

No doubt the selection of scapegoats deserved what they got, but there were many who escaped. I'm sure you know about the devil's bargain struck with the sinister 'butchers of Harbin'.

I sometimes wonder about the pangs of conscience experienced by those unfortunate cogs in the wheels of totalitarian ultranationalist juggernauts, whether it be Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, the Red Guard or North Korea and others. What would YOU do when your life and those of your precious family are on the line if you subvert?

At the atom bomb memorial in Hiroshima there was a display of photos of fallen kamikaze, heroic young boys who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Emperor/God and their country. Heroes? No. Victims. Just like every foxhole occupant who was blown to pieces, every child who had their chance at life snuffed out by historical circumstance and everyone who lost a loved one in that sad reflection of the human condition.

I don't call myself Lifeliver for nothing. Have a nice life, everyone! Oh, and watch out for a (much lighter) Japanese-themed parody coming to an Amiright site near you early next week.

Those poor Japanese boys.....but the victims of Nanking, Bataan, Unit 731 and millions more slain under the Rising Sun are still dead. BTW, I lived in Japan 1956-58 as a boy. Played baseball with Japanese kids. Was nine before I heard of Pearl Harbor and Hickam Field. Ordinary folks are just that, true. But the past must not be forgotten as unrepentance can reach into the present in the form of Madame Tojo, Leni Riefenstahl, and others.
