The Lyrics

Yes, Marlon Brando. I don't know who played Sky Masterson in the original Broadway version of "Guys and Dolls," so I'm going with the 1955 film version. Once upon a time, Senators James Buchanan of Pennsylvania and William Rufus King of Alabama were roommates in Washington. In the days before big Congressional pay raises, Congressmen roomed together much like pre-free-agency baseball players did. But Buchanan and King were almost never seen apart, neither ever married, and King was, by the standards of the day, effeminate. So they were thought of as what we would now call a gay couple. Evidence that they actually were was slim, but one became President and the other Vice President -- though not at the same time. They were not running mates. Whether they were "mates" in more than the British/Australian sense, history isn't clear on it. By the time Buchanan became President in 1857, King was already dead. By the time Buchanan left the White House in 1861, the country almost was.
They call you Jim or Buck.
But there is room for doubt.
At times we have suspicions this is your day
of coming out.

No female date I see.
Over Rufus you'd gush.
Did you check out his tight breeches, Jimmy
and gaze down at his tush?

Did I forget my manners
or throw my vote away?
And so I wonder if the chief is gay...

Buck, be a lady tonight.
Buck, be a lady tonight.
Buck, you were ever kinda shady to begin with.
Buck, be a lady tonight.

Buck, seems like you want to be
honored with the Presidency.
But is it only business dealings
that we know you sin with?
Buck, can you be straight we me?

First Lady, no, you don't got escort.
Your hostess, she's only your niece.
And, baby, do you wander all over the room
and look for executive piece?

And Southerners now want to fight.
They still think that slavery's right.
Looks bad, now, Jimmy, you're not someone we can win with.
Buck, be a lady tonight.

First Lady, no, you don't got escort.
Your hostess, she's only your niece.
And, baby, do you wander all over the room
and look for executive piece?

And Southerners now want to fight.
Time for Buchanan's big flight.
Save us now, Abe Lincoln, you are someone we can win with.
Buck, be a lady...
Buck, be a lady...
Buck, be a lady...
tonight!

Well, being from New Jersey, I learned more from a three-minute record, Alvin, than I ever learned in school. (So how come most of Bruce's better songs last a lot more than three minutes?)
