Original Song Title:

"First They Came"

Original Performer:

Martin Niemöller

Parody Song Title:

"First They Came (for The Cartoonists)"

Parody Written by:

Peter Andersson a.k.a K1chyd

The Lyrics

Martin Niemöller was a German priest who came to oppose the Nazi movement back in the early 30s, today he's mostly known for "First they came", a short poem about lack of courage when it comes to defend freedom of speech and a free press. (Google and/or Wikipedia has more). As for this parody, well... right now governments all over the western world are trying to stop newspapers from printing cartoons of Mohammad because apparently such pictures are such an offense to some people in the Middle East that they need to kill someone from just hearing about it! Hallo Governments! What happened to preserving freedom?
First they came to kill those who had cartooned something offensive
But I didn't speak up, because I had never cartooned

Then they came to kill those who had published something offensive
But I didn't speak up, because I had never published

Then they came to kill those who had written something offensive
But I didn't speak up, because I had never written

Then they came to kill those who had said something offensive
But I didn't speak up, because I had never said anything

Then they came to kill me
And by then there was no-one left to speak up
