This whole wealth redistribution is socialism which is almost communism talking point is still ridiculous. Most people who believe it don't have enough money to have their taxes increased, and those who will have their taxes increased will only notice their money is missing if their accountant tells them about it.

Parody is about form over content, is it not? Content, be it political, sexual, whatever, is secondary. But because the political carries so much emotion, I think people get caught up in it and tend to forget the form, which is the point.

I think the only time that content could possibly be secondary is when the song being parodied is ubiquitous in pop culture and has not already been a frequent target of parody, which is not true for either case for Oh Christmas tree. Dave already addressed the main issue with form here, and there are many examples of this site when both form and content are extremely strong. The best place to look would probably be the SOTM winners list, which I think can be found either through the drop down menu at the top of amiright or in the song parody contests forum in the messageboard.

Because writing something that fits perfectly with the tune, lyrics, and rhyme scheme of a popular song is much more impressive and potentially much funnier than writing the same thing as prose or even a non-parody poem. Content and form are both extremely important, and I consider it impossible for a great parody not to be strong in both areas.

Ethan, your first sentence supports my point about form and how very important it is in a parody. It also begins to define what strong form is. How would you define strong content?

Strong form is very important, and without it strong content can be wasted, and the same is true when a parody is structurally sound but the content is no good. It is much harder to define strong content because it is much more open to personal opinion, but interesting storylines or clever jokes/wordplay or at least original thoughts are likely to result in strong content and I didn't see any of those here.

I think parody content has to be judged in light of original content and in terms of subjective labels like humor and cleverness. It is not as easy to pin down as form. Because of this, my point has always been that form is primary and content secondary to good parody writing. Both are important, but form is paramount. My real point of all this from the very beginning, however, was that people can't read a political parody without going off-track and getting caught up in the politics of it; something I'm sure we all know anyway.
