The Lyrics

January 16, 2015. The Wall Street Journal reviewed recent market and financial news from Canada under the title, “The Maple Leaf Faces a Harsh Fall”. TSE = Toronto Stock Exchange.

O Canada!
Thy loonie lately tanked
Quarterly gains scaled downward for thy banks.
With growing doubt, we just point out
The world-wide glut of oil;
Arctic tundra
And shale-sands now stand on thawed less-frozen soil.
Target aimed wide, Burger King’s keen;
God! you can keep your doughnuts and poutine.
God! you can keep your doughnuts and poutine.

O Canada!
We’d best get with the times.
We still sing ‘thee’ in all our anthem’s rhymes.
Some decades late, we’ll say 'Inuit'
Replacing 'Eskimo'.
Automotive
Sector now is found in northern Mexico.
Last century ‘belonged to us’ – don’t mock!
Bring back the Avro Arrow and the auk!
Bring back the Avro Arrow and the auk!

O Canada!
We’ve problems with high-tech:
Dimmed hopes at RIM, and layoffs in Quebec.
If Bombardier can’t sell Learjets, how
Compete with Groupe Airbus?
Reports of sales
Of patents RIM’s investors dare not trust.
God, please ignore Journal’s prophecy -
Bless the exchange rate for our currency,
Bless the exchange rate and the TSE*.

Workman-like and precise, as usual, but rather dense, rhetorically, as usual. Very honest effort. Just didn't get all the references. Most of us are not Canadians or financial mavens. Be aware of your audience, O.K.? And concentrate on wit, simplicity and singability. I concur with the previous 3s, and fortify them.

Some fellow got a lot of attention on the internet a while back for singing the relatively unknown second verse of "The Star Spangled Banner" (There are four verses in all, the 3rd and 4th are almost never sung, and most Americans are not aware they even exist.). As a Yank, I was not aware of additional verses to "O Canada". I guess there are some now. I think I understood most of the references. I liked the lines about "thee" and "Inuit instead of Eskimo". Rob Arndt will see this and write an "I Put A Spell On You" about the Avro Arrow, if he hasn't already. Security code for this comment "FKM", which is what a lot of authors around here think of their critics.

@Patrick; As many retro comments on gov't's canceling of Arrow program already have been made in Canadian media, would prefer to get Rob's comments on the auk! @"NoCanuck": Perhaps 'harsh' as per WSJ title, to score a 'precise' parody with 3 for pacing? You're unlikely to see radical change, as this is my posting #51, and a few non-Canucks, e.g. Patrick, seem to like my style. Not worried about singability, as most of these songs get performed at an open-mike with sing- or play-along by up to 40 other participants. I will try to aim for simplicity, but avoiding porno-lyte, profanity and political attack, I rely on word-play and quirky history for punch. Thanks for your comments in any case.

I wasn't thinking; I should have given you a 5 for pacing. At any rate, as of this writing nobody gave you a higher score in any category than I did. Reading The WSJ is not in my DNA, and that probably explains some of the difficulties I had with your references.

I already have done a parody using the CF-105 Arrow a long time ago. As for conspiracies, can't say if RL-202 escaped destruction or not or if there was a secret 6th airframe sent out to Britain or th US. Two ejection seats from the Arrow program survive to fuel the debate as well as a few unconfirmed "sightings!"

@RA: Thanks for helpful info. @NoCanuck; Like you, I'm not a finance maven or WSJ subscriber - a friend provides me with occasional clippings. You've now revealed what's in your genes, we're having a nice chat, and we agree I might benefit by reviewing examples of your work. Shouldn't I know who you are?

DKTOS, but gave a 555 anyway. I don't really follow Canadian news but last read of Target's pull out and BKs bold move. Most Americans are not aware of Canada's contribution to the Manhattan Project- uranium nor of the many postwar conflicts that Canada has sent troops and supplies. The RCMP are also revered and the Arrow was the best interceptor of its time. The US also shut down Avro Canada's disc programs that originated in Nazi Germany- 16 designs by Dr. Miethe, not counting the Avro Spade, Avrocar (GETOL air jeep), and several other designs by Canadian designers. They bought out Miethe and offered better pay for Avro engineers in the US. At least one of the discs flew and has been photographed in flight. A jet type wth twin vertical stabilizers. The RCAF claims it lost the photo! See the IFO Picture Library (my first hosted site).

Longtime writer here, @nocanuck that wasn't bad at all, if a bit weird (but I like weird). Thanks for being sincere and forthright, something this site has been lacking heavily for quite sometime. Giorgio, I dktos and many of the references but I applaud your efforts.

@Agrie; Thanks @RA; sounds like insider info, good thing Avro Canada not traded on TSE since 1963. @NoCanuck; Annoyed. Doubt story of "Martin", (Have you supplanted the original NC-troll?) Please remove ethnic slur from 'neophyte' song, and with Chucky's help from this website, and do standard submission. Otherwise, help! I've lost my thread!

Agrimorfee: In the past two weeks, I have seen your screen name attached to many comments. You seem to be a leader here. I will read some of your parodies, although I despair of knowing their origins. As for myself, I have never submitted a parody to this site for formal publication. But since I have given advice to Giorgio, and he wished to know more about me and my credentials as a parodist, I obliged this one time as a matter of honor.
No Canuck (Martin Gardy) - January 21, 2015 - Report this comment
Giorgio, you have confirmed my fear about the toxic nature of the Internet. I worked hard on my tribute parody to oblige your request, but obviously you are too cynical to deserve it. I apologized for the ethnic slur beforehand. It was a necessary part of the parody. To Hell with this! I am out of here. Bad site. Bad members.

Good call, Giorgio. Use the amiright Search function to enter "fake jewels" in the Parody Song Title box, bring up the one matching parody, then scroll to the bottom of the comments thread, and you'll see what I mean.

Tried it, and also searched other venues. There is a parody with the same title and the same OS at AIR (not surprising in such a vast collection), but I have to tell you that the text of Martin Gardy's parody is original and unique. Whatever you have against this guy, I don't know. But he's no fake. Perhaps he's owed an apology, assuming he's still reading here.

@NoCanuck#1/"@GC"; Interesting (Nan-)disclosure...... Don't these 2 song-threads display that the use of disposable pseudonyms detracts from this Comments Section in a major way??? (As a holier-than-thou mea-culpa, I have used the risible "Self-Critic", "Make-BelieveForever", and "GiorgioConiglio'sCousin", but these are clearly transparent, and I recant this practice.) @NoCanuck#2/Searcher; "fake jewels". No other comment.
