The Lyrics

Back when the Great War was raging, in the US speed races were still a very popular way to get peoples mind off it. Racer Barney Oldfield made a request for Harry Miller to build him a custom streamlined race car in 1916 and a year later for $15,000 the "Golden Submarine" debuted in the Maywood Stadium, Chicago, IL. It was futuristic looking at a time when all other race cars were open speedsters and it hit 108 mph during test runs. Oldfield entered it in a Maywood 250 mile race but due to mechanical problems with the engine, it didn't finish. Still, people were facinated with the machine. Oldfield still worked on her and took her to the track but got into a wreck and the vehicle caught fire. After that, Oldfield went over to Firestone to promote tires and tried to build a custom car bearing his name- the Oldfield Sports Coupe. Only 1 was ever made. As for the "Golden Submarine"... it was restored and now sits in a museum. Number 27 was sometimes referred to as the "Golden Egg" or "Lightning Lemon" due to its shape, speed, and metallic gold color.
Streamlined racer was new
egg-shaped try

This Great War racecar was improved
Sight never seen
“Golden Submarine”

Open speedsters- standard
Miller turned that around
Built for Barney Oldfield
The racer was enclosed all around!

[Test run 108- design was sound]

Streamlined racer was new
egg-shaped try
Could fly!

Ran Maywood
Ran Maywood
Ran Maywood
A 250 mile race
Spectators stared
Curiosity
Flaw- lost its place

[Yet no disgrace]

Quit racing
Streamlined racer was new
egg-shaped try
(Oldfield left for tire sales in ‘18)
