The Lyrics

The famous Webley revolvers led up to two further developments that ended well for one but not the other. The odd auto-revolver Webley-Fosbery was recoil driven and rotated the cyclinder and re-cocked the hammer b/c the units rode over the frame. This obviously created field problems where dirt and mud clogged the action, so it ended in failure. But the next Webley & Scott Self-Loading Pistol Number 1 MK. 1 .455 W&S Auto proved to be a much better weapon. Issued to the RN in 1913 it had a few faults: was heavy, ungainly-looking due to square angle of the butt which threw off instinctive shooting but was fine at deliberate shooting; shared a .455 cal round that could fit .455 Webley service revolvers but was actually .456 compared to the revolvers .441 and subsequently blew the chambers upon discharge; and it was ergonomically awkward to hold and fire. Still, several models were made and further issued to the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) and the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in WW1. These weapons were not well-received and were not standard issue militarily. The civil spin-offs in 9mm Browning and .38 ACP found favor with civilians and London police alike. The guns made it through WW1 but never replaced the Webley revolvers for WW2. Complications arose when the Brits dumped their weapons at Dunkirk forcing emergency buys of Smith & Wesson revolvers from the USA and gradually moving towards Browning autos...

Remember seeing a review in an old issue of Guns & Ammo. The author spent $2 or $3 a piece for 13 rounds of old, surplus military ammo. Not much of a test, but who wants to risk busting one of those weird V-springs. I think someone does make brass for it, out of US .45 ACP, but not much of a market. Sort of like 7mm Nambu. I saw one 30+ years ago at a gun show. $500 then. Priceless now, I assume.

Patrick, you must be a real collector of small arms whereas I pieced together arsenals from time-to-time! Never paid much attention to vintage weapons and costs, but have seen plenty in museums and other people's collections. Thnaks for the Webley comment that led to this parody! @AFW... yeah, I still have a ton of info to share... with those that like these types of topics :)

Usually I have to sell one gun if I want a different one. Regret a few that I didn't buy and some that I sold. Stopped by a Wal-Mart last night. They were all out of .22 Long Rifle. Still had some .22 Magnum and that weird new .17 rimfire. A friend told me he couldn't hit anything with a .17. Too easily deflected by the wind. Cabela's has more 7.62mm Nagant revolver ammo than they have of .38 Special. And cheaper, too. I hate these panic buying situations.

Hey Patrick, I've got a friend that has a very old Schwarzlose pistol in 7.63mm that is very worn, circa 1905. The 7 rd mag is missing and some rust. What's it worth if you know? Was found in an old garage belonging to a Russian man!
