The Lyrics

The Rebel LeMat Grapeshot Gun was an attempt at a multi-barrel battlefield pistol that offered 9x .40 cal rounds + a secondary 18 guage shotgun round underneath the main barrel. Mostly used by Confederate Cavalry, the gun was difficult to use b/c of the need to switch the hammer device to fire the other barrel. This would be difficult enough before a battle and almost impossible while riding a horse or engaged in a firefight! The GG offered a lot of firepower for shooting down Yankee troops, but it was moderately complex and production values were poor in the South for all small arms. Jeb Stuart led a charge with the GG and so the gun is associated with him and his battle cry. It's 9x .40 rounds were deadly enough but adding the shotgun shell helped immensely on the ground. The first Yankee troops that found these guns were baffled by the design. Although an order was placed for 5000 guns, only several hundred were produced in the South and overseas in France. Postwar, it was retained in French penal colonies. It died-out by the late 1870s. But many Confederate Generals owned one as did George S. Patton as part of his collection!
Grapeshot Gun multi-use
“Stuart Cry!”

.40 and a .60 too!
Was twin barreled
Made for the Rebels

Cavalry handled it
Yet problems did abound
Although shots were deadly
It was tough to switch from round-to-round

[Hammer switch not wise on battlegrounds]

Grapeshot Gun multi-use
“J.E.B. Stuart Cry”
Reb pride

Hard to shoot
Weight to boot
Product- crude
Production not that great
Effective? Fair
At 1-5-0 feet
Arrived too late

[Design debate]

Quality?
Grapeshot Gun multi-use
“J.E.B. Stuart Cry!”
(poorly made, lacked accuracy)

I've seen modern reproductions of the complex and versatile pistol. It's Victorian appearance has made the non-firing cast metal replicas popular with the steampunk crowd.
