The Lyrics

This one is about the NAA (North American Aviation) XF-107 (unofficially, the Super Super Sabre) that was developed from the F-100B proposal. It featured an AM (All-Moving) tail, P/Y (Pitch and Yaw) dampeners, automated flight control system, in-flight refueling, and the capability to carry nukes underbelly. But its most striking feature was the above-cockpit dorsal air intake that fed the P& W YJ75-P-9 turbojet. This was known as the VAID (Variable Air Intake Duct). While very efficient regulating air-flow to the engine, it also blocked rear visibility for the pilot and would pose problems with ejections. Nevertheless, in 1956, it flew and was in competition with the XF-105 Thunderchief which won- barely. A legacy of the F-100 Super Sabre, the two surviving XF-107s are now in museums (one at Pima, Az and the other one at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio). Yes, everyone remembers the dorsal intake for the engine and then with the F-16 it went ventral (underneath)!!!

Doesn't the Russian Sukhoi have its intakes above the wing to avoid sucking in gravel from low quality runways. Americans spend hours combing airfields and flight decks for the tiniest piece of debris. The Russians put their intakes where they can't ingest it. The Americans spent millions trying to develop a pen that would write in zero gravity on space flights. The Russians used pencils.
