The Lyrics

After the P.23R raid against NY was abandoned, the Italian AF decided to use the CANT Z.511 floatplane for use against NY Harbor. The ambitious plan was to mount two manned SLCs (Slow Moving Torpedos, aka "Pigs") to the floats and take-off from German-occupied France at Bordeaux. The Z.511 would refuel at sea with a U-boat and then fly low under radar to approach NY. Capable of landing and mooring in 7-ft seas, the Z.511 would drop the divers who would then take-off on the "Pigs" to search for targets in the harbor while the Z.511 took off for the return flight home (again, tanking with the U-boat). The divers were to be left behind. They would penetrate the harbor and look for targets. Once found, they would detach the 661 lb timed warheads and get as far away as possible before detonation. It would be a propaganda victory and the divers would surrender to become POWs. However, after the mods by 1943, the two aircraft were caught in a strafing attack and were destroyed. The Italians then moved on to Plan C with the SM-95 aircraft...
NY raid, part II
Z.511 in wartime

Italians tried to modify you
Carry SLCs for scoutin’
Divers would be mountin’

Italian AF planned it
“Pigs” attached to floats, bound firm
Z.511s coming in under radar
Would land, drop divers, and return

NY raid, part II
Z.511 in wartime
Warheads timed

Of no use
Of no use
Of no use
Plan dangerous at best
U-boat refueling beware
Easy target while on the sea
Enterin’ the harbor too tough a test

Despite urgency
NY raid set, part II
Z.511 in wartime
(both were destroyed in 1943)

I could see those Italian divers blending into New York City's large Italian population and simply assimilating. The plan for refueling at sea from a submarine would seem to make more sense from the standpoint of range rather than trying to build a non-stop bomber. The Italians had flown a large fleet of seaplanes to the US back in the 1920's, so they had experience at such things.

Patrick, the Germans had similar back-up plans with the Bv-222 flying boat as it ran off diesel engines and could be refueled at sea. It was the last Fuhrerflugzeug too that Baur planned to get Hitler to Greenland or eventually to Norway for transport by U-Boat to S America!!!
