The Lyrics

During the '50s and '60s NATO contemplated VTOL aircraft as replacements for battlefield attack aircraft that could use improvised bases to t/o and land. The Fw-1262 was the VFW proposal for such a replacement for the Fiat G.91 that both Italy and W Germany shared. That proposal then became the VAK-191B designation and three prototypes were eventually built along with an early test rig. The project began in 1965, but Italy backed out in 1968 leaving VFW to move ahead alone. VFW became VFW-Fokker in 1969 and then the first VAK-191B flew in September 1971 followed by the second prototype a month later. The third prototype was left as a ground test unit. Despite being an equal to the British P.1127 (which would lead to the Harrier) the W Germans could not fund the program alone and instead cancelled the VAK-191B in 1972 in favor of the MRCA which was destined to become the Panavia Tornado. The VAK-191B was a VTOL aircraft designed to carry a 2000 lb weapons load basically 300 miles at subsonic speed. It would have the ability to hover like a helo and also fly like a normal jet at very low-level with a MTU/Rolls-Royce RB.193-12 thrust-vectoring main engine plus 2 more Rolls-Royce/MTU RB.162-81 lift engines. Although W Germany had both VTOL transport and fighter projects at the same time, interest in VTOL came to a halt when high production costs were considered for that time period, the Harrier remaining as the only exception for NATO...
Postwar Fw-1262
‘60s VTOL time

German obsession after WW2
Lift engine tryin’
VTOL flyin’

NATO would demand it
VTOL Air-to-Ground
Improvised airfields handy
From where to lift-off and set-down

Postwar Fw-1262
‘60s VTOL time
3-engine whine

VAK-191B flew
VAK-191B flew
VAK-191B flew
Replacement for G.91
Two took to the air
Amazing sight to see
Italy backed-out, British won

VAK-191B
Postwar Fw-1262
‘60s VTOL time
(proved too costly)

Performances by the USMC Harriers were a major attraction at air shows for years. Once, though, the vertical blast began to rip up the concrete runway on which the jet was parked. The Harrier demo had to be canceled. I wonder if the Germans and Italians had similar problems with vertical take off and landing.

E Germany was not permitted to build combat a/c by the Soviets, but W Germany was in an awkward position too since they were not allowed to build from 1945-55. When they could they immediately went to VTOL and advanced helos but were pressured by Europe and the US with joint programs or buying off the shelf instead. W Germany lacked both the funds and poilitical will to build great military systems after WW2 due to WW2 stigma and so usually bought US or Euro-exports. But as MBB became part of DASA and now EADS, everyone is waiting for the 21st century indigenous German fighter at some point to replace even the transitional Eurofighter. Germany has plans for stealth a/c and may secretly operate a few Firefly II black triangles. UCAV development is there and plans for a "Black 20" (2020) fighter may proceed.
