The Lyrics

The WW2 German Luftwaffe assault rifle FG-42 was overshadowed by the appearance of the early STGs Mkb42 on the Ostfront. After the terrible losses on Crete due to British long-range fire the Luftwaffe wanted a more powerful weapon than that of the MP-40 SMG of 9mm and normal K-98k rifles. They wanted one of the new assault rifles under development, but not with the new intermediate cartridge. So both Kreighoff and Rheinmetall-Borsig made two versions of a new LW rifle for assault. But after Crete, the German paras became ground infantry and so only 7000 of these rifles were ever made during the war. It was a fine rifle, but had problems with heavy recoil from the full 7.92mm cartridge and had trouble with control on fully automatic fire of 750 rpm with the lightness of the design and flimsy bipod. Nevertheless, the rifle went into action with the rescue of Mussolini in 1943. The Germans had by then put the MP-43 into action as well (a false designation to keep Hitler unaware of assault rifle development). That led to the MP-44/STG-44 and on to the STG-45 by war's end. The STG-44 led to the AK series in the USSR while the STG-45 led to the CETME in Spain and back to W Germany as the HK G-3. As for the WW2 German paras, there were several bullpup assault rifle designs in 1945, but only one was prototyped (Wimmersperg Spz-kr). An earlier bullpup design had been rejected by the Luftwaffe...
Paras with FG-42s

Lookin’ for a better weapon in 7.92 (mm)
For para fightin’
Looked frightenin’

The Luftwaffe couldn’t stand it

Full-power cartridges were deadly
Paras rejected the intermediate cartridge unsound

WCJ just about gave me an idea for another song, if you don't beat me to it. Saw an FG42 once, just before it got cut up for scrap because of the ATF rules. Such a loss. Parts worth about $1500. Complete gun, if it could have been legally transferred over $50,000.
