Started in 1996 under Project 935, then 955, the 4th Gen Borei Class SSBN is destined to replace the aging Delta IIIs and Typhoons in Russian Navy inventory. The new sub displaces 24,000 tons and is driven by a single 200Mw OK-6506 reactor and can reach submerged speeds of 29 knots using pump jet propulsion. It carries 16x SS-NX-30 Bulava missiles with 6-10 warheads each, yield of between 100-150kt each. In addition, there are 6 launch tubes for anti-shipping missiles SS-N-15s of 20kt each. The lead sub the Yury Dolgoruky has been delayed by constant upgrades and repairs while the Alexander Nevsky completed sea trials in 2011. A third sub the Vladimir Monomakh is completed while the fourth sub Knyaz Vladimir was laid down in July 2012. Russia expects a total of 8 subs operating by 2015. Each costs an estimated $800 million with overruns.
