The Lyrics

Normally, I don't shear my sheep with anyone, but due to the corrupting influence of certain contributors (ewe know who ewe are) I've decided if you can't bleat 'em, join 'em.

In my pastoral Oz childhood, there were many favorites. Candy Girl had the sweetest face. Fairyfloss was fleet of foot, with a fleece that would make Jason and his Argonauts go through it all again. Baabara, the dulcet Dorset, was a bleat heart. But lovely Lollipop topped the lot.

OS from the 1934 movie 'Bright Eyes' - colorised clip here.

ON MY GOOD SHEEP LOLLIPOP

I've grown away from boys
They're really such a pain
Girls wanna make girl noise
No matter cute or plain
These days how I get my high
Candidly telling true
And when I do, like it to
Stay 'tween me and you …

On my good sheep, Lollipop
A discreet trip - on her back I hop
Cute moutons play
On the sunny fields of Botany Bay
Corriedales stand everywhere
Southdown Black bleats fill the air
And there you are
Happy branding and a touch of the tar

See her face of coal and her tootsie roll
And this big bad devil's heart aches
If your joy's too much - ooh ooh
You'll wake on the lam(b): law breaks
In the sheep dip, to cool off you hop
Woolly wild hips, bop till we drop
And dream away
With my good sheep Lollipop

She's my good sheep, Lollipop
Prime Merino, cream of the crop
As Romneys play
On the sunny slopes of Westernport Bay
Dorset Horns stand everywhere
But with Lolly they cannot compare
And there you are
Be demanding but don't go too far

See their meek heads loll and their tootsie roll
Like a big bad devil's wool cake
If their fleece you touch - ooh ooh
You're at stake for a rude awake
Do a dag clip, plop plop plop
But watch out: vice squad helicop
I dream all day
With my good sheep Lollipop

(When you awake, it's to jail they'll take)

From your good sheep Lollipop
Do a back flip, and no charge you'll cop
So stay away
From that good sheep Lollipop

Nothing sheepish about this parody. Got a kick out of the Romneys reference. 5's
Meriadoc - October 11, 2012 - Report this comment
I cannot begin to imagine who could have influenced such depravity. Really - I'm shocked! ;)
Corrupting Influence - October 12, 2012 - Report this comment
Shirley Temple would be proud, I'm sure ... and there actually was a commenter at one of moi's parodies who used the nick Shirley Temple, and the parody was not related to the actress/statesperson, nor to sheep. (It was about Windows Vista.)

Overall, good job, but I don't know why the Romneys are involved at all. Seems to be a cheap political shot (I am not a Republican) that is irrelevant to your theme and story. What about the Kennedys playing in Hyannisport?

Which Westernport? If in AUS, why would they be there? If the one in Maryland, USA, I don't think that Maryland is known for sheep-ranching.

I would dock a point for throwing the distraction of politics into an otherwise-delightful sheep-romp, but will abstain in the hope that there's some connection that I'm missing.
Lifeliver - October 13, 2012 - Report this comment
Thanks for the compliments and for 'blowing your cover', heh heh, though you're not the only one. I was kicking myself later for missing a great sub, actually: 'Happy landing on a chocolate bar' to 'Happy randy and the flock a lot baa.' Damn.

FYI-1, Romneys are a versatile breed of sheep, more common in NZ, primarily for wool, somewhat less for meat. They used to be called Romney Marsh (not to be confused with famed cricketer Rodney Marsh). As for that very topical GOP candidate, as a non-American I studiously abstain from comment, though I do have an opinion.

FYI-2 Westernport Bay is a deep harbor port east of Port Phillip Bay, Vic., on the latter of which sits Melbourne, my home turf. PPB has no slopes to speak of and few sheep, but WPB does.

FYI-3 As far as I know, there are no sheep on Botany Bay, just south of Sydney - it was 'geographic licence'. That fabled landing place of Captain Cook was regarded as too swampy and lowlying for anything, let alone sheep, so the first European settlement was established a few miles north at Port Jackson (Sydney Harbor). I believe most of BB has been drained and urbanized these days. With too much rainfall, sheep develop footrot, so are generally favored away from the coast, with dairyfarming dominating the latter.

I sometimes complain about your didacticism, so I better shut up, lol.
Corrupting, But Now More Edcated, Influence - October 13, 2012 - Report this comment
Me complain? I *asked* -- seriously -- and am darned glad I did, because

1) Now I know more than I did yesterday. With any luck, I'll know even more tomorrow, and therefore, not remain at the present level of ignorance for the rest of life; and

2) You can't change a vote once it's in. You could vote again, but that wouldn't erase the 545 from the board.

I don't care to voice an opinion ATM on the former Gov, but of course as you said, he and the other three are extremely topical, with less than a month to go before the POTUS election. Their ads and news stories are inescapable. And sadly, this site is filled with political parodies containing cheap shots, slurs, and insults, as opposed to political parodies successfully lampooning a pol's blundering or downright evil. Yeah, a bit touchy there.

I'd have felt terrible to have down-voted wrongly. I think Onan mistakenly lauded what was perceived as a ref to the Governor, presumably because Onan's Nofan of his Mitt. (You'd think he would be, woudn't you?)
Psst! Hint! This is why the (in-)famous TT fooTnoTes originated. US-ians are unlikely to know breeds of sheep in Aus-NZ. 555 now gladly awarded, and did you ever meet veteran AmIRighter Stuart McArthur, who still lives in Melb'n?
Lifeliver - October 13, 2012 - Report this comment
Thanks for suspending judgment, Tommy. I appreciate it. And yes, a couple of footnotes would have helped. I'll keep that in mind in the future. Can't say I recall Stuart, but Melbourne's population is around 4 million. Coincidentally, the godfather of the sheep industry in Australia is John McArthur. Possibly a descendant?
Peregrin - October 13, 2012 - Report this comment
LL, for what it's worth, I got your Rodney Marsh joke :) And laughed!
Lifeliver - October 13, 2012 - Report this comment
@ Peregrin: Come to think of it, Rodney was rather hirsute - and sported mutton chops. In his playing days Romneys weren't very common in Oz, but the Kiwis must have got some mileage out of it. Perhaps it's an advantage for a wicket-keeper to be easily led, lol.
Peregrin - October 13, 2012 - Report this comment
I wonder if he secretly kept a pair of 'Velcro' wicket-keeping gloves? Only for the Kiwi tours that is... :)
The Godfather - October 14, 2012 - Report this comment
LL, isn't *everyone* in Australia the descendant of the original boatload of convicts? xD

(After that shot, TT had best duck quickly back into his shell, lest you have him "sleeping with the fishes". ... ok, it's a very common surname, in the US as well.)
Lifeliver - October 14, 2012 - Report this comment
@ Tommy I'm British-born as it happens, but just as disreputable as those pedigree antipodeans anyway. John McArthur was a gentleman farmer and free settler who arrived a couple of decades after the 'first fleet'.

As penance for above slur, I invite you to cast an unprejudiced eye over my forthcoming parody, 'Tricky Triggy', which has a math theme. Actually I have two in the pipeline. The other one is a dollopful of dubious double-entendres which should also be up your alley.
Andy Primus - October 14, 2012 - Report this comment
Hilarious tale of rump romping. I wonder if any of the American readers knew what a dag is. I got the Romney ref as I'm originally from the Sowf-East, although now living in the East Midlands. I see that you're UK born - which area?
Meriadoc - October 14, 2012 - Report this comment
I know what a dag is. I read The Thorn Birds....
Lifeliver - October 14, 2012 - Report this comment
@ Andy: Thanks for the v/c and for dropping by. My family hails from the Manchester area (Rochdale). I was six when we emigrated, but I'd started school and remember a little.
@ Meriadoc: 'Dag' has slang meanings as well as 'that' one. It can mean unkempt, poorly groomed: 'Those jeans look so daggy'. It's also used for a card/character/life of the party type: 'You gotta meet Julie - she's a total dag!' Language is no exact science, eh?
Andy Primus - October 14, 2012 - Report this comment
I knew about the sheep & unkempt ones but not the party one - is that a more recent meaning?

I shall do my penance (or Penzance) willingly, but could you give me an e-mail heads-up? I'm not going to be posting any more for a while, for various reasons (time-constrained), and won't be checking the boards daily.

I look forward to the math parody! I've done two. (Merry, you do NOT need to go read them!! ;-D)

Peregrin - October 15, 2012 - Report this comment
Merry, my friend Wendy often refers to me as a dag. In my case, it is where I have done something silly or drawn the wrong conclusion from something that should have been obvious. In this case (at least, I hope!) she means it as a very mild insult, but not meant to be at all hurtful or taken seriously. Sort of like "You're an idiot, but I like you anyway". Dunno if that helps explain it?
Lifeliver - October 15, 2012 - Report this comment
@ Andy: Actually, dag = 'interesting/outrageous person' seems to be archaic nowadays. My ex and her friends used to use it but I haven't heard it in that sense for a long time. Actually I haven't lived in Oz for 17 years so I guess you could say I'm no expert on slang trends. One of my favorites more recently is 'shark-biscuit' = surfboard - so Australian..

In addition to Pippin's meaning of 'friendly chiding', another way I've heard it used is 'goofing off', as in 'Will you two stop dagging around and get busy'. Versatile word.
Peregrin - October 16, 2012 - Report this comment
Not as versatlie as 'buggered', but that's been done recently :)
