I SCHEMED A SCHEME

When I set out and joined a bank
And the bosses were soft
Everything was lawful.
When I set out my mind was blank
All the staff were a bore
And the work was quite awful.
When I set out I was wanting more.

I had a scheme some years ago
My hopes were high for making money.
I schemed so much and hoped to show
That life for me would turn out sunny.
But I was young and quite naïve,
My plans were made and then rejected.
What could I then hope to achieve?
All hope seemed gone, I was dejected.
But more thoughts came to my head,
I could hear a clap of thunder.
And when lightning struck as well
I dispelled all thoughts of shame.

I kept a notebook by my side,
I filled each page with awe and wonder.
I took it all within my stride,
And it was done when summer came.

But still my scheme lies in my drawer,
They say it doesn’t meet compliance.
I’ll have to think a little more
To get it past the board of finance.

I had a scheme my life would change,
Much different from the pay I’m earning.
Much different now from what I dreamed
And laws have scotched the scheme I schemed.
