The Lyrics

Some people are wondering when I'll cough up a new parody. Okay, here it is, you've smoked me out.
(vocal intro)

Took a walk and passed your house
late last night.
Saw a crumpled box of cigs.
Menthol light.
From within a dim light cast:
Two cigarettes did you smoke.
Oh, what a sight.
Alas, 'twas no joke.

Pulled a Marlboro right out.
Teeth clenched tight.
Smoke rings I could really see
in the night.
Offered me one of your stash
those cigarettes that you smoke.
I couldn't say
to you, love, "No way."

Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Ah, ah-ah-ah.
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Ah, ah-ah-ah.

(instrumental break)

Lost control and had to cough.
I was sore.
Had to throw up, ran right through
bathroom door.
Then two strangers, EMTs
saw cigarette in my hand
said, "He's in shock,
bring him to the doc!"

Ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba
ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba
ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba
ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba
Ba!

Rushed to hospital with wings
on their wheels.
Got some oxygen, I liked
how it feels.
Vowed that you and I would keep
those cigarettes out of our house
for all of our days.
Tobacco makers are a louse!

Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Ah, ah-ah-ah.
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Cigarettes.
(Cigarettes.)
Ah, ah-ah-ah.

No cigarettes
in our
house!
Hou-ou-ouse!
I was once taping songs off an oldies station, and after "Silhouettes," the next song was "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen. Now I can't imagine "Silhouettes" without hearing "Hungry Heart" in my head next, even though the songs were released 23 years apart (1957 to 1980), don't sound anything alike, and as far as I can tell, the only thing they have in common is that Bob Crewe, who wrote "Silhouettes" with Frank Slay and later did Freddy Cannon's and then the Four Seasons' early records, is Bruce's (and my) fellow New Jerseyan.

Maybe you could do a "Hungry Heart" parody as a sequel? "Everybody wants a healthy heart", etc. Since too many people these days _don't_ have a healthy heart.

I smoked cigarettes from my early teen years to when I was 27, and tried to quit after that. But I still smoke when I am stressed out, depressed or angry, and have been smoking more and more lately as I develop a dependence on nicotine again. Great job, and you get 5s for your effort.

This is not the kind of thing we expected when we commissioned you to write the next advertisment lyrics for our wonderful product. Our lawyers will be in touch.
