The Lyrics

I had to memorize this whiny cowboy piece of dreck in school many years ago. Lately I got to thinking there's precious little "Range" left any more. But there's the downtown east side of Vancouver ...
Oh take me downtown
Where the prostitutes frown
And the pimps and the drug pushers deal
Where Asian youth thugs
Pick victims to mug
And the girls in the stripper joints peel

Home, home on the street
Where the bums and the bag ladies meet
Where punks slash their hands
And the gay hookers prance
And the winos pick fleas from their feet

Oh take me downtown
To the soot-covered ground
Where the heroin addicts get stoned
Where organized crime
Takes every thin dime
From the businesses other folks own

Home, home on the street
Where the whipping boys go to get beat
Where panhandlers beg
And society's dregs
Steal the shoes from right under your feet

This was pimply a fun read. I am almost whores from laughing. Wine know it was this good I'd have read it sooner. You surely stripped the glamour out of downtown urban areas. I'll pay tribute to this as soon as I pay tribute to the mob so I don't get any part of me broken.

There are three things I like about this. One, you re-wrote that bloody awful cowboy song. Two, you touched upon topics usually not funny (drugs, prostitutes, etc.). Three, you have a name that is a reference to one of my favourite TV shows! Looking forward to seeing more from you!

PMS, Guy, bobpiecheese - thank you so much for your remarks! This is my first song parody, and I'm really pleased you liked it!

Super stuff - an excellent first submission: and your first parody, too? Very impressive, indeed.
And welcome to the SOTM competition, too: after what happened last month, may I politely suggest you make sure you've read the rules, so that you know what's expected of you.

Thank you, Phil and Max. Phil - I did read the rules, and I meticulously went and left a comment on every song that was in the thread before mine. If there's anything I've missed out on, please do let me know.

You got the written rules under control methinks, now for the unwritten, most of us veterans are prone to come in more or less late with SOTM comments and even more so with the votes, don't hold your breath because approx fifty percent of the voting action goes down during the last three days or so, that's just the way it is...

(SOTM) Smeg-man, nice job. Didn't know Vancouver was that bad until now. :) Cheers.

-Originality (B-): There's only so much you can do with "Home On The Range", and while this is a good idea, the song is too short to make any real impact on me. - Pacing (A): It's hard to mess up a song that's this short as far as pacing is concerned. - Comedy: (C): Kinda funny in the morbidly depressing kinda way, but other than "The winos pick flies from their feet" it was a pretty average parody. Overall (C): A bit too short for a song of the month contest, but since this is the first one I've seen you in I give you props for sheer gutso.

Well, I can cross off Vancouver as a place to live. Small towns do have some advantages... anyway, I liked this, it's pretty dark, but its a bit short and IMHO needed something truly dark to make it cringe-worthy enough to get that "wow" or "OMG" factor. 5s.

(SOTM-NOV) Commented and voted on November 23, 2007. Ran out of puns for this. Used them up on the first go. Read again and still funny.

(SOTM) Very good!

(SOTM) I liked the irony of using a good 'ole homespun "proud to be a Yankee" tune to describe life on today's good ole American streets, Smeg (IB?) - some clever lines in that respect - probably not enough to be SOTM-worthy, but I'm tipping you're not far away - 555

(SOTM) Welcome to the contest Smeg, the only thing I can say is don't give up, you are clearly talented, the only problem is that it just wasn't quite a serious enough contender because the song is too short to make into a masterpiece, this particular month was also a huge month for veterans who largely entered epic comedies of well known challenging songs, but this is encouraging as to what to expect in the future.

(SOTM) Still lovin it (and your name ;))!

(SOTM) Welcome to SOTM, Smeg! As has been said before, this has some great lines, and you're obviously a talented writer. I loved the dark humour....a little more zing on a longer OS, and you'll definitely be a future contender. 555

A good effort...one of the shorter songs, but still well written, I enjoyed it.
