The Lyrics

A tale of the life of the early Easter Island mariner who once navigated the waters far from the "Navel of the world". Over time, it was feared that the other lands had been swallowed up by a giant sea creature or had sunk, leaving the people alone in the world. They stopped sailing and began a slow, but inevitable, decline down to 3,000 people by the time the Europeans arrived in 1772.
He sails in oceans wide
As far as he doth please
And bendith down in tapa cloth [1]
Unfurled upon his knees

He waits for no man
On land, great speech he doth deliver
But in the midnight hours
His tough inked hide doth shiver

And when all is dark and gloomy
Sunrise not as yet
He prowlith underneath the palms
Seldom in regret

No, but he is a bold seaman
Never in dismay
Obsidia at his side always [2]
As his twin canoe doth sway

Ancient mariner
Grits his teeth to bear
While his mind doth wander
To lands that are not there

Oh, woe to him who casts his nets
Far away from shore
Swallowed whole by the Tarakadan [3]
Fearsome sea monster

A beast she be
In unknown seas
Listen,
Hear her in the breeze?

What once was firm
Consumed by she
Moai backs towards the sea [4]
Rapa Nui, Rapa Nui [5]
[1] Tapa cloth is a treebark material used for clothing and other uses, [2] Obsidia was used to make weapons, very sharp with cutting edges, [3] Tarakadan is English translation of old Polynesian sea monster myth consistant with Rapa Nui beliefs, [4] Moai were the large sculpted rock heads facing inward on Rapa Nui, [5] Rapa Nui means "Navel of the world" and became known as Easter Island upon discovery by Europeans
