The Lyrics

In the year of our Lord, nineteen seventy-two
we lift off from the Cape Kennedy
And our flight was to land on the surface of Moon
and we had with us new set of wheels!
She was wonderful car, she could go near and far
and oh, how the four wheels drove her!
She was not very fast, she had television mast
and we called her the Lunar Rover!

We had one telly cam for the Moon views to scan
We had two seats for driver and crew
We had three days to stay on the Moon, make our way
We had four motors to make our trips through.
We had five miles of range, we had six gears to change,
Seven miles per hour to reach cover -
We had eight bags of rocks of the Moon at the docks,
In the hold of the Lunar Rover

There was skipper John Young who was handsome and strong,
There was pilot of LEM, Charlie Duke -
There was Ken Mattingly who was left alone to be
on the orbit while we went to Moon
There was room full of crew in the Houston who knew
all the details of our mission up over -
And your man Ferencz Paulics from the old Hungary
Was designer of the Lunar Rover

We had spent seven days on our trip, so to say
and then Houston called us for return
We made lift-off at moon and in six minutes, soon
we met Ken, docked and saw Moon at stern
Our mission was success, so reported the press
We did science, took the samples and drove there -
But to save fuel and time, our dear car was left behind
She is still there, our Lunar Rover!
Rest in peace, Neil Armstrong. You were my childhood hero. But Apollo 16 was no less remarkable mission on scientific behalf.

I'm pretty sure that the first lunar rover was designed by Bendix in '61 followed by the Soviet L-5. Chesley Bonestell also designed a 3-caravan of tractor vehicles for exploration supply! Bendix rover from '60s: http://public.bapilon.com/pat/LRV_files/image022.jpg

As an aside, did you know that in 1952 Von Braun proposed a 4000 ton lander? I'm surprised that the Nazis didn't propose such a thing. In the 1920s there were German circular space station proposals from Oberth and Noordung. Then the Peenemunde A-11-13 space rockets, EMW A-4b, A-6, and A-9 spaceplanes, the Sanger Silbervogel (Silverbird) antipodal bomber design, Draeger space suits since '42 (one in the German Museum), manned and unmannned disc craft, and Hitler's insane inquiries of building a sun cannon to burn cities at 4000 mile altitude! Postwar, Junkers came up with the RT-8 space transport system that later would become the space shuttle and Von Braun developed US spacecraft while his counterparts taken to the USSR by force built Soviet satellites and space launch rockets.

WOW! Sixteen votes! Nice you liked the song. The original song is a nice and brisk Irish folk song, so I thought it would make a good basis for a parody. I don't know if anyone has so far made a moon buggy parody, but the 40th anniversary of Apollo 16 and the passing of Neil Armstrong beg for a tribute.
