The Lyrics

Another half-finished entry in an old notebook. Decided to finish it. "Sounds of Silence" is a classic by Simon and Garfunkle, which has been remade, most splendidly, by a fellow named, appropriately, "Disturbed". "Yellow Rose of Texas", the Mitch Miller version, was my "first" song. My parents said I responded favorably every time I heard it on the radio or TV. In 1953 or thereabouts, Columbia Records released three versions: original lyrics, which would be regarded as "racist" today (let's just say that "yellow" does not refer to a flower), the hit Mitch Miller rendition, and a recording by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Hello, Darkness, my amigo
I've come to talk again
A most disturbing vision's
Been planted in my brain
It came while I was sleeping
And awakened, still remains
It sounds a lot like silence
A fluke I can't explain

I had some dreams, sleepwalking
Which is usually the case
I tripped on slippery cobblestones
And fell flat on my face
The sky was cold and rainy
I was blinded by the light
Then everything went silent
Had I split my head that night?

The light I saw was naked
Ten thousand people, nude
They talked while saying nothing
And never listened--rude!
The lyrics they have written
Not destined to be sung
Forever bound in silence
A bell that's never rung

Oh, you bunch of foolish people
The things you never tell
Are growing like a cancer
And dropping down the well
I'd like to reach and teach you
You're not listening at all
I might as well be talking
As my Mom says, "to the wall"

Then the crowd commenced to prayin'
To a god of neon light
As he flashed to them a warning
And told them "This ain't right"
It's written in graffiti
On a subway tunnel wall
They were screaming out for pity
But they made no sound at all

I've got a goofball smoosh spinning in my brain half finished for years. Maybe this will motivate me to finish it
