While I agree with the sentiment, using a hymn to get the message across was tasteless.
I gotta disagree with Pat. It may be irreverent, but it's not tasteless. "How Great Thy Fart," now THAT's tasteless. ;-)
I thought using the hymn was great. I sang this all the way through.... You could have probably done the whole song just on Benny Hinn alone.... :-D
Meriadoc--Thanks. Yes, BH is a worthy subject. The magazine THE DOOR (formerly THE WITTENBURG DOOR) "The World's Just ABout Only Religious Satire Magazine") has great fun at his expense. There is not doubt that Benny Hinn is a false teacher. What better way than to use a hymn to dispell one who wants to sell God for his own profit; not prophet.

I had said originally that I agree that making a profit like this is wrong, I still think the sentiment is right on your parody...I still wish another song could have been used. Gary, why do you want to parody religious hymns?
well the whole notion of religion to begin with is a bit off, but the reality is the religous hymns are easy music to play with, basically all they are is ancient chants set to music. i am not for or against any reigion, its just a whole book ful of music to play with. and nothing sets off a fanatic quite as excitingly as religion, is like gas on an open flame, and i enjoy the arguements myself. i have a totally different strategy for mormons and jeehovas witlesses, I have a theological discussion on things they arent prepared for, like who did Cain marry? and why did he build a city? what did the hittites ever do wrong anyway? and who says the Philestines Jacob slew were bad folks? if god knows where every sparrow falls then isnt it his fault they fall? and on and on.
I see, Gary. I thought at the time that they were just awfully easy music to use. I wouldn't really call most people that object to hymns being used this way fanatic. They just don't want their God made fun of.
I'm as religious as the next guy, I guess, but...I don't think making a parody of a religious song or hymn is wrong. I mean, God didn't write any of them (well, some are based on Psalms, but He didn't write the music). Besides that, a tune that is used for a secular song (say, "He's So Fine") can be used to make a religious song (say, "My Sweet Lord").
I personally put my faith in Jesus, and agree with David Limbaugh's observation that Christians are the one religious group in America who you can still openly ridicule. While I'm certainly not in favor of seeing anyone's freedom of speech quashed, there was a time when we still exercised enough civility to not purpose to hurt one another. Why don't we just try to be humorous, and leave the religious bigotry on the ash heap of civilization

Note to David and other conscientious objectors--You are certainly right about some things. Imagine the (correct) reaction to parodies that were aimed at any minority group or non-Christian religion. The point that I hope you didn't miss, though, is that I am working from the *inside* here. I am anxious that people realize that not all confessing Christians dismiss the life of the mind and turn Christianity into something more 'visceral'--even 'pathological'--in the way that these TV people do. And historic orthodox Christianity is not to be identified with the "prosperity" doctrines taught by them. In fact, the publication THE DOOR--which pokes fun at so much of contemporary Christianity--is itself a Christian publication which invokes the principle that all forms of idolatry (many televangelists included) deserve to be *laughed at* just as Elijah laughed at the priests of Baal. Back to the 'minority group' analogy. I think the above is analogous to poking fun at, say, rappers. Not the minority often associated with that music, but the lunatic subculture that leaves a bad taste even in the mouths of many members of that minority.
'Pat' you can't be offended buy making a mockary out of a hym. You have to realise that religion is a complete sham, a farce, a story made up to delude the people in mindless submission. Don't pay reverance (or money) to something that only serves to delude you as to the true spiritual nature of reality. Or if you want to be morally outraged relative to point of view of complete ignorance then be as you are. WOrshiping an imaginary God and paying money to the Church.
I respect religion, but I don't think it's disrespectful to use the hymn. If anything, it makes for a more pointed criticism at the real target. All the people who say they are upset with "religion" should figure out what they're really upset with and deal with that. it "deludes the people into mindless submission"?. Hee-hee, that's an original concept -- did you hear some hippie say that when you were twelve and starting to rebell against the nuns? Faith is faith, scam artists are scam artists. Develop a little bit more sophisticated (and original) way of thinking about things. It will serve you well in life. Oh, I almost forgot -- this is a very nice parody, Mark.
