The Lyrics

It has now been one year that I have been contributing to this website. The first few I put on were "Walking into Sea World" and "We Didn't Quite Retire". Since I started with a little less than 200, I have written around 400 new parodies in this past year. I have also recorded for or with Johnny D, Philbo, Claude, Martha, Bob Gomez, Mer and Pip, and as of yesterday, Jeff Reuben. I'd say it's been a pretty productive year, and though my own songwriting has taken a back seat, I'm not a bit sorry. As Johnny will attest, a parody can be re-written to be an original song, thus the "egg and chicken" question is answered. I'm grateful to have found this outlet and all of you out there. It sure beats having them sit in a notebook on a shelf. And if I've inspired anyone else, like you have me, then it's all good.
Oh, when I found Amiright, I got wired
I wrote like a fiend, for I felt so inspired
A world, mocking tunes, which I'd done all my life
A hobby I'd shared with dear Mari, my wife

Where I cranked out almost 600 tomes
Which now far exceeds all my songs and my poems
One year seems so fleeting, while in these ranks
Site mates, this is my thanks.

The site seems to grow as the authors increase
I'm glad I was able to chip in my piece
Friends that I've made here are distant but true
I hope that Chuck G. keeps on letting us through

New recording---Us and Jeff.

Congratulations on your 1st Amiright Anniversary, Rick (had my own 1st anniversary on September 8th, 2004, the same day Bob Gomez coincidentally - and it was indeed a crazy but wonderful coincidence - posted his parody of "Let It Be" called "Johnny D") ..... And thank you, Rick, for being one of the best friends I've never met (yet!), as well as a generous recording artist and parody collaborator. May we both rocketh onneth, Highlander laddy!

Johnny, I didn't realise you beat me to the site until I saw your anniversary posting. I became aware of people here gradually. If I had it to do over, I would have taken my time, but I had this idea in my head that if someone had the same or similar idea and I knew about it, then I couldn't post mine. So I slammed on everything I had first, then got to know people. Thanks and likewise. Now what do we do for an encore?

Congratulations. You did a lot in one year. i wonder how much that was in votes.

We pick a Mount Everest of classical music, and you and I collaborate on a parody of it. Got any ideas?

What comes to mind right away is "Bolero". There are two long themes that alternate and repeat many times. We could alternate verses. Ravel actually won a bet about orchestration that he could take one melody and one rhythm and make a 20 min piece out of it and make it not boring because the orchestration keeps it interesting. If you've ever heard it performed on piano you'll know why he won that bet.

You're on. I like it. My wife likes to watch figure skating and ice dancing on TV, and that's a piece of music that's popular with skaters. Did you ever notice, on the old original Star Trek TV series, whenever Captain Kirk got in a fight with somebody, the music they'd play sounded suspiciously like an incredibly cheesy rip-off of "Bolero" ?

I just downloaded Ravel's Bolero. Hmm...what can we do with it? Gonna take some thought. Interesting...

It was just a first thought. Let's come up with a few other options.

Well, I've kind of shelved "Hair On The G String" (that's the song "Hair" from the Broadway musical & movie "Hair", not the other kind of hair), since it would be an extremely slow tempo version of "Hair" and just sounded kind of blahh. Mozart has some lively pieces ... "A Little Night Music" is peppy. "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" by Grieg has possibilities, too. Whaddaya think?

Inspire, you most certainly did, Rick. We were all the richer for your presence :)
