The Boomer Sooner college fight song has its origin back in 1898, when Bob Cole and Billy Johnson wrote a Hawaiian ditty titled "La Hoola Boola". Two years later, in 1900, Allan M. Hirsh adapted the tune to create the Yale fight song "Boola Boola". In 1905, Arthur M. Alden rewrote the lyrics as "Boomer Sooner" for the University of Oklahoma. However, that's not the whole story. The last two verses of "Boomer Sooner" are adapted from a different tune altogether, the University of North Carolina cheer "I'm a Tar Heel Born". And that's where the story timeline gets interesting. According to Wikipedia, "I'm a Tar Heel Born" originated in the late 1920's, but the last two verses of "Boomer Sooner" were added in 1906. So Oklahoma U added two verses to their fight song using a tune that would not be written for another twenty years! I'm speculating this has something to do with Doctor Who.
