Song Parodies -> "America (Sotomayor)"

Original Song Title:

"America"

Parody Song Title:

"America (Sotomayor)"

Parody Written by:

Tommy Turtle

The Lyrics

OS lyrics here.

SONIA SOTOMAYOR:
Puerto Rico
You lovely island
Island my ancestors flee from
Always the US, we're going
Always, my racist Judge robes, flowing

TOMMY TURTLE:
Sotomayor
Welcome to my land
A land where we should be free from --
-- Government meddling growing
Judges with biased speeches, blowing!
Bad direction, going
Right and Left wing, crying
And my freedoms, dying
I like promotion on merit
Stuff up your pipe and just bear it!

EVERYONE:
Why not just be an American?
"Latina", she, not "American"
But Tommy T., he's American
Heritage, oui, but American [1]

SOTOMAYOR:
I am much smarter than white men

TOMMY T:
I have a butt you can bite, then

SOTOMAYOR:
Giving minorities big zoom

TOMMY T:
Merit-less country, our sure doom

EVERYONE:
Pro-motions steal, in America
Cutting a deal in America
'Bama's appeal in America?
Wounds, hardly heal in America

SOTOMAYOR:
I'll ride Mercedes to D. C.

TOMMY T.:
I'll try to stop it, so help me!

SOTOMAYOR:
I give minorities "free ride"

TOMMY T.:
'Ffirmative Med School? We've all died [2]

EVERYONE:
Immigrant goes to America
Daughter's job grows in America
Spouts biased prose in America
Bill Of Rights foes in America

SOTOMAYOR:
I'll be a big hit on TV

TOMMY T.:
Only on MSNBC

SOTOMAYOR:
Ev'ryone, my appoint-ment, hails

TOMMY T.:
Ev'ryone, 'cept us poor white males

EVERYONE:
Media roars in America
Taking what's yours in America
Give to dumb boors in America
Justice, restores not: America

SOTOMAYOR:
When I will get on Supreme Court?

TOMMY T.:
Why did your mother not a-bort?

SOTOMAYOR:
Everyone there will give big cheer

TOMMY T.:
Everyone here live in big fear

[1] Tommy's immigrant ancestors, no matter where they came from, were so grateful to find a home and a better life in the USA that they wanted very strongly to be known as "Americans", not as (fill in the blank), or "(fill in the blank)-Americans" ("hyphenated Americans). Like many others of that era, they even Anglicized their family names. No one's saying you need to do that now, or should do it, but if this country is where you make your citizenship, your home, and your career, why do you persist in identifying as being something else, or hypenated-something else? If "American" isn't good enough for you, go back to that culture of which you're so much prouder and fonder. No one will stop you, Tommy promises. ............... (The "oui" was for rhyme purposes only. Lots of countries in the family tree, but no French.)

[2] Think about it: You're being wheeled into the operating room. Would you feel comfortable knowing that the surgeon wasn't necesarily well-qualified, but got into college, medical school, internship, and residency, so that numerical quotas could be filled -- and couldn't be washed out for failure, for fear of the ensuing lawsuit? Rest easy, now...

BRAVO!!! Broadway comes to the Supreme Court! Really brilliant piece of work, Tom!!!

Yeah, this one was great! I turned on a YouTube version to follow along and watched the dance interlude in the middle and the dancing ending. This one fit pretty well, especially the two voices.

(Applauds) Bravo, Tommy Turtle!! You put a great performance with Sotomayor! I echo Mark's comments! Well, all is fair in love and politics! Or should I say all is fair in love and parodies! :) It's all good! 5's!
Michael Pacholek - June 04, 2009 - Report this comment
A 5 on the performance (tough original song, I've never tried it), a 1 on the sentiment. She's more qualified than any of the current nine were when they were appointed. Maybe someone who likes REO Speedwagon (I don't) can try "I just can't fight this Judge Sotomayor."

Fantastic diatribeologue! No matter where one resides on the ROYGBIV of the political spectrum, one can't deny the greatness of this parody... Someone's on the groovy juice!

Great parody writing TT. The "MSNBC" made me lol.
I must admit that I'm a little more hopeful about Judge Sotomayor than you are.

alvin, thanks.

Mark Scotti: If you're a WSS fan, TT has done "Gee, Officer Krupke", "I Feel Pretty", "Tonight", and "Maria (4x). If interested, you know where to find them... thanks for v/c, Mark!

Timmy1000: Thanks... glad ya watched the video. It's worth renting the movie, although it's not as good as the Broadway play. (some lyrics were changed/censored to meet 60s movie standards.) Thanks for v/c, T1K.

Christie Marie M: (bows) Thank you! I echo my reply to Mark, if you like Broadway! Thanks for v/c, CMM!

Michael Pacholek: Thanks for not finding that "sentiment" button! ... how 'bout Stones, "(I Can't Fight Judge) Sotomayor" ("Satisfaction")? ... thanks for v/c, MP.

(He's a) Travelin' Man, gave a lot of props
Such compliments hurled
And he's such a sport, took time apart
From his trip around the world

Invisible Boy: Actually, the SC often "does" have a way of changing people. If she gets in, I'll give her a fair chance, just as I did/do for Obama. Right now, I can only go by what she has said (unfortunate), her legal opinions, and the opinions of her opinions from her (fellow Hispanic) mentor. Time will tell. Thanks for v/c -- glad ya liked the cable news joke!

Great job on this...I plan to do one to this tune in the near future..

What REALLY scares me about her is her opinion on RIAA type issues. . .though I won't say I disagree with most of her opinions, a few of her decisions from what I've researched really left me scratching my head.
TT - June 05, 2009 - Report this comment
AFW, thanks... looking forward as always.
Below Average Dave: Wasn't aware of that part -- if you get the chance, please come back here and tell us about the RIAA decisions. Thanks for v/c, BAD.

wired.com/threatlevel/2009/06/high-court-nominee-adopts-riaa-stance/ is the particular place I found out about it.

Below Average Dave, thanks for the link. I'm a firm believer in copyright protection (look at the outro to all my parodies lol), but there has to be some sense of proportion. If you play one of my songs in a club and get paid $25, you could send me $5 if you like. But not $222,000.00! ....

Good topic for you to parody, since you're intimately involved in the issue. The rest of us are mostly hitting her on her statement that she can make better decisions than any white man (if *that* isn't blatant racism, what is?) and that 80% of her decisions are reversed on appeal, indicating she's not supporting them well or they're unsupported by the law. Even her own mentor (Hispanic also) criticized her lack of giving any reasons for her decision in Ricci v. DeStefano, in which white firefighters were denied promotion based on the color of their skin. If *that* isn't racism .... oh, wait, I already said that... anyway, how 'bout an RIAA-oriented parody on her, to expose another side?

Politics aside ;D this was not an easy song to do. You did a fine job. Be flattered...the original lyrics were written by no less than Stephen Sondheim!
Tommy Turtle - June 09, 2009 - Report this comment
Old Man Ribber: Thanks. ... very much admire Sondheim (actually even put his name in TOS author name up top), and have shown my admiration by doing about a half-dozed other WSS parodies. Thanks much for v/c, OMR.
