Parody Song Title:

"This Land Was Our Land"

Parody Written by:

Patrick McWilliams

The Lyrics

Trying to see the story of America from the point of view of the people who got here first. With a nod of credit to the famous Jib-Jab George Bush video.
(Chorus)
This land is your land, it once was our land
Until you stole it, you thieving white man
From the mighty forests to the flowing waters
This land you took from folks like me

Your men were horny, our women were frisky*
You stole our ponies, you sold us whiskey
You talked of Jesus, while you spread diseases
This land you took from folks like me

This land is your land, it once was our land
Until you stole it, you thieving white man
From the mighty forests, to the flowing waters
This land you took from folks like me

We passed the peace pipes, we watched you smoke them
We signed your treaties, and then you broke them
You grabbed our riches, you sons of b*tches
This land you took from folks like me

This land is your land, it once was our land
Until you stole it, you thieving white man
From the mighty forests to the flowing waters
This land you took from folks like me

Without the paleface, I guess there'd be no
Reservation smoke shop casino
The best advice is "Cater to their vices"
Money we take from folks like you

This land is your land, it once was our land
Until you stole it, you thieving white man
From the mighty forests to the flowing waters
This land you took from folks like me

By the Rio Grande I went out walking
Some people were crossing, I heard them talking
Their words should scare ya' "Es mi tierra"
"Su tierra fue hecha para mi"

This land is your land, for now you own it
But only for, a few more moments
Across the border a chorus sounding
"Esa tierra fue hecha para mi"
*There are historical accounts of Native men sharing their women with explorers and traders, out of hospitality or in exchange for goods.

I loved the tie-in to border security. We really gotta fix that quick.

Provocative opus with a clever twist at the end. The rhyming, particularly "advice is/vices" and "scare ya/tierra," is very well done.

I'd like to enter this in the contest, just to hear someone with a better voice than mine record it. If you know how to negotiate the process, please feel free.

I'm a Native American, and I approve of this message.

There are a couple of inaccuracies in this otherwise amusing effort. For one, the white men who did the original thIeving of land were Spaniards, who are responsible for the Indians having ponies in the first place, and the stealing of ponies was much more an act perpetrated by Indians against whites. They also stole people including a lot of kids. Second, the Indians gave much of the world lung cancer. If whites are going to be blamed for every ill of mankind under the sun, let us at least be honest about tobacco. It has killed far more than almost any disease and is still going strong in many countries.

Someone is still reading my stuff 12 years later. That's amusing. Some groups, especially the Huron, captured or adopted whites, and sometimes Black slaves, to replace Hurons lost to battle or diseases. Many of the founders of what is now Kansas City, Kansas were descendents of such adopted Hurons or Wyandots. I once saw a cartoon of a stereotypical Native in a feathered headdress pointing at a picture screen featuring the image of a pair of human lungs. He addressed an audience of fellow Natives with the following, "And then we'll get 'em".
