We are hoping to kick but the planet is glowing
What are they hoping to kick, and why? Also, why would the planet's glow affect that?

...And I'm putting out the fire with gasoline.
Wouldn't gasoline make a fire even bigger or was this an intentional contradiction?

Goo goo goo goo goo goo
Couldn't find any suitable words in the chorus' last line, could we Mr. Aladdin Insane? Still, it's a terrific song from rock's favorite karma chameleon of sound + vision.

David Bowie himself has said that it has no literal meaning, that it's just random letters and numbers meant to convey a mood. Let it be a lesson to us all to never use cocaine.

We passed upon the stairs, spoke of was and when.
Although I wasn't there, I made my way back home.
I love this song and wouldn't want to change it for the world, but this, in typical David Bowie manner, makes no sense whatsoever! (But perhaps the "I wasn't there" line could refer to what was being spoken about as he passed the person on the stairs? Still, it's kinda confusing.)

A lemon in a bag played the Tiger Rag
Look at it. Of course it makes no sense whatsoever. Bowie has millions like this. To him, the words don't seem to need a meaning; they are used to create a picture or an impression.
