Let me drown in your laughter
Laughter can't drown anyone.

The afternoon is heavy on your shoulder.
An afternoon is a time of day; it has no weight.

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
Nine feet high? That's almost to the ceiling! You'd need a ladder to get in and out of bed.

And they say that he got crazy once
And he tried to touch the Sun,
And he lost a friend but kept a memory.
In general I like this song. But what the heck is this passage supposed to mean? Sure, trying to touch the Sun would be crazy enough. But what friend did he lose? And what was the memory here that he kept, or what memory about it would be particularly worth keeping?

Sunshine on my shoulders
makes me happy.
If your shoulders got sunburned, it wouldn't make you happy.

John Denver's,
"Today Is The First Day Of The Rest Of My Life"
Today is the first day of the rest of my life
I wake as a child to see the world begin
The singer recorded this song as an adult, not as a child. And no person witnessed the beginning of the world.
