I need to know that you will always be the same old someone that I knew
Oh, what will it take 'til you believe in me, the way that I believe in you?
He is so anxious about assuring himself that she will never change. Then he implies that she should believe in him as much as he believes in her. Which is he, insecure or confident?

I'd rather laugh with the sinners
Than cry with the saints
'Cause sinners are much more fun
Don't you know that only the good die young
Simply untrue.

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday.
What does he mean, "a pretty good crowd for a Saturday"? Show me a bar whose Saturday crowds are generally worse than on other days of the week.

Now Paul's a real estate novelist
What in the world is a real estate novelist? Is there a market for books about the adventures of properties?

Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes
Sure, that should be enough to go on. You don't know the name of the song, and you don't know how it goes, but the piano player's supposed to be some kind of a mind reader? And then you say you once knew it "complete". Complete? Just how drunk are you? And what was that young man wearing when you were wearing his clothes?

Brenda & Eddie were still going steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would be at the end of July
then later in the song...
Brenda & Eddie had it already by the summer of '75
What exactly is the timeline here? This couple gets married in July 1975, but are having marital troubles 'by the summer of '75'? Totally contradictory.

And they say you can't go home anymore.
I can always go home and stay. Because I can't tarry around at mental institutions, prisons, residential schools, and jails, at all. No way. So these four places make me feel homesick.

Everyone goes south every now and then.
I love Billy Joel, but this line just made me stop and ask 'what?'. An Amiright moment, if you will.

And if I don't have a car, I'll hitch
I got a thumb and she's a son of a bitch!
Who does "she" refer to? And how can this mysterious female entity be the "Son" of a bitch? Doesn't that pertain to a male, by definition?
