C-A, say
[later]
G-A, jay
In each verse of this song, they take a consonant (from the first half of the alphabet) and pair it up with the vowels, one at a time, clustering the consonant with a long vowel sound each time. When the letter 'C' is followed by an 'A', it is supposed to be pronounced "kay", not "say"; this is because the "hard" sound is used before A, O, and U; not the "soft" sound (which is how the letters 'C' and 'G' themselves are pronounced). The same is true with the letter 'G'; why didn't they sing it "G-A, gay"? (On that note, the word gay meant "happy" back then, so they could have used it with no trouble.) Also, while "ce-" and "ci-" are almost always pronounced with a soft sound (the single exception being the word "Celtic"), "ge-" and "gi-" can be pronounced with a hard or soft sound, depending on the word and/or language....and "ga-", "go-", and "gu-" are ALWAYS pronounced with a hard sound.
