Ever hear an unbeat song with very depressing lyrics?
Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics, Sgt. Barry Sadler
Check out the index.
Back at home a young wife waits.
Her Green Beret has met his fate.
He has died for those oppressed,
Leaving her his last request:
Put silver wings on my son's chest,
Make him one of America's best.
He'll be a man they'll test one day.
Have him win the Green Beret.
With the lilting cadence and tune of a patrotic hymn, this song starts off as a celebration of the Green Berets. But it ends with the lines above, telling of the "young wife" widowed by the death of her Green Beret husband, and about his "last request" to have his son follow in his footsteps, with an all-too-poignant foreboding of the possibility of history repeating itself.
