The greatest gift they'll get this year is life (Oooh) Where nothing ever grows No rain nor rivers flow Do they know it's Christmastime at all? Why: "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was released in December 1984 and quickly went up both the charts in several countries (including #1 in Britain and #12 in the U.S.). Band-Aid was a super-group, in the true sense of the word. Gotten together by Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats, in London, to record a song and album for raising funds for fighting the extreme drought and extreme hunger and death that was plaguing sub-Sahara Africa (mainly Ethopia and Etriea at the time). It brought together members of such diverse British groups as the Beatles (Paul and George), U2, the Culture Club (Boy George had to fly in on the Concorde for the recording session), Tears For Fears, Bananarama, Duran Duran, etc. it did it's job of raising funds and set a tone for the rest of the 1980's of renewed interest (not seen since the early 1970's) in political and humantarian issues amongst rock and pop artists and the audiences that bought and listened to the music.
