Story about this misheard lyric by: Phil McGrath While learning this song (from a Beatles recording), I created a mental image of the writer and the circumstances around the writing of the song ie. hot, southern night, fight with spouse, lying on the couch, door propped open with matchbox to try to get some air moving and considering leaving. A friend heard me play and questioned the lyric. When I heard his version it suddenly made perfect sense. Years later I heard an interview with the writer (Carl Perkins) and the scenario I had created in my mind was pretty much the way it happened. |
