"Believe"
The Funny Lyrics: Do you believe in life after love?
Why They're Funny: Well, if we didn't, the world's population wouldn't be half of what it it today, now, would it? I mean, I love the song, but I don't see broken-hearted people disappearing into thin air all around me. Or anywhere at all, really. (I suppose I could have put this into one of the other sections, but it probably fits here the best.)

The Funny Lyrics: Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Why They're Funny: 'Just' indeed! Very much South of Mobile and they would have needed to pick him up in a boat rather than a wagon, for they would have been in the Gulf of Mexico!

"Half Breed"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: My father married a pure Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me The Indians said I was white by law The White Man always called me "Indian Squaw" Why They're Nonsensical: Actually, the Cherokee are a matrilineal society who would readily accept the mother and child. The father might be asked "Who the hell are you, pale face?"

| "Dark Lady"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: Then I remembered her strange perfume,
and how I smelled it once in my own room. Why They're Nonsensical: She once smelled strange perfume in her room, but that alone didn't make her suspicious?? It only struck her as significant once she realized whose perfume it was??

"Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves"
The Dirty Lyrics: And Papa would've shot him if he knew what he'd done
Why They're Dirty: What did he do? Why, he made her pregnant, of course! It becomes obvious in the final verse of the song.

"Paradise Is Here"
The Song Lyrics: Paradise is here
Song They Mention: Paradise - Sade. (Editor's note: Coldplay did not have any songs out at the time this one was recorded, therefore it is not plausible that they would be mentioned in this one. As a reminder: A SONG CANNOT BE MENTIONED IF IT DID NOT EXIST YET.)

"The Way of Love"
The Lyrics: When you meet a boy that you like a lot and you fall in love but he loves you not . . . etc. . . . Then what will you do when he sets you free just the way that you said goodbye to me?
Why: Unless this song is about a lesbian whose girlfriend left her for a man (or a straight woman whose BF just came out) it makes no sense. Starting with the first line the perspective is that of Cher singing to (presumably) a woman, or women in general, about the dangers of fickle men. But at the very last minute the perspective changes to Cher talking to her ex-lover (presumably a man). Additionally, the whole song is a few poorly constructed run-on sentences. This my vote for worst song ever.

"Gypsies, Tramps, And Thieves"
The Lyrics: Picked up a boy just south of Mobile,
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal. I was sixteen; he was twenty-one, He rode with us to Memphis. Why: Refers to the cities of Mobile, Alabama and Memphis, Tennessee.

| "Dark Lady"
The Lyrics: The fortune queen of New Orleans Was brushing her cat in her black limousine On the backseat were scratches from The marks of men her fortune she had won Couldn't see through the tinted glass She said "Home James" and he hit the gas I followed her to some darkened room, She took my money, she said "I'll be with you soon"
Why: "Dark Lady" was a #1 hit song for Cher back in 1974. The opening verse I posted above has a shoutout to New Orleans, a real place.

"Believe"
The Lyrics: No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside And I can't break through There's no talkin' to you It's so sad that you're leavin' It takes time to believe it But after all is said and done You're gonna be the lonely one...ohhh Why: It's a pretty upbeat tune for a breakup song, Then again, the woman realizes she's better off after the breakup, so maybe it's appropriate for it to be upbeat. (In fact, this song helped me get over a bad breakup.)
