Story about this misheard lyric by: Hans Holzherr I didn't mishear the line, but it seems that most singers who are not native speakers of English get the line wrong. I have never ever heard the correct line in Switzerland. Nobody cares to look up the lyrics because it doesn't cross their minds that they might have misheard. |

"Highwayman"
The Insincere Lyrics: I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
Why They're Insincere: 1st line: Schooners are coastal vessels and not intended for high seas, let alone rounding the Cape Horn. 2nd line: Schooners have fore-and-aft righs which are furled on the boom and the job is done on the deck. Square rigs are furled on the yards. Moreover, reefing and furling is done _before_ the weather gets foul. 3rd line: Schooner rigs do not have yards. Yards are for square sails.

Why: On what? A wall? A clothesline?...Oh, did you mean to say '[they] HANGED me...,' which uses the correct past tense when referring to the method of execution?!
