"Send In The Clowns"
Misheard Lyrics: Don't you love fires?
My fault I fear. Original Lyrics: Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear. |
Story about this misheard lyric by: Candace Mercer I'd never listened closely to the whole song before. But I heard it on my car radio, and heard the above lines like the misheard version cited. I didn't think the song was about regretting turning somebody into a pyromaniac, so I thought I must have misheard those lines. I checked a lyrics site and found that indeed, I did mishear them. |
"Someday Soon"
The Dated Lyrics: There's a young man that I know
His age is twenty-one Why They're Dated: This song came out in 1969, so this man is now 63 (as of 2012).

"Anna Thea"
The Dirty Lyrics: He will rob you of your flower and he'll hang me from the gallows.
Why They're Dirty: I was about to present this song once for a school project, but at first didn't understand what the flower had to do with anything. When I asked my mom, she explained that it was a euphemism for her virginity, which led to an 'Oh' moment. I realized that ultimately this song is about a woman who vainly attempts to use sex to bribe a judge from executing her brother.

"So Early, Early in the Spring"
The Lyrics: If the girl is married, then I must go
I swear I'll stay on land no more I'll sail the seas 'til the day I die Why: This song, despite its beautiful, cheery tone is one of the saddest I know, being about a young sailor whose lover betrays him while he is at sea.

| "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?"
The Lyrics: Once I built a railroad, made it run
Made it race against time Once I built a railroad, now it's done Brother, can you spare a dime? Why: This is a well known song about unwarranted desperation during the Great Depression, but Ms. Collins treats this song with an upbeat Bossa Nova rhythm, that seems inappropriate.
