The Lyrics

This is one of my brother's favorite songs. Since it deals with disillusion and a sense of loss, it seems an appropriate frame for lyrics dealing with how I'm feeling about politics these days.
Stars and Stripes, a sight so fair
And fireworks bursting in the air
A dream of freedom we all share
My country was that way

But now things take an ugly turn
The cities flood, the forests burn
The lesson clear, refuse to learn
We gave it all away

We're catching hell from both sides now
No compromise! Their solemn vow
While those in charge evade and stall
They don't accomplish much at all

Jeers and taunts and slogans proud
They chant obscenities out loud
Then drive a car into a crowd
That's how it's done these days

The law? A dog and pony show
Pretend to care, then let 'em go
We can't be "racist", don't you know
And so they slip away

The Monday Morning body count
As homicide statistics mount
The bullets fly, the corpses fall
Our backs are up against the wall

Pants Suit versus Orange Hair
Republic wrecked beyond repair
Inject a needle of despair
Wish they'd just go away

Deplorables, we vote for him
We'll only just get screwed again
The swamp endures, we cannot win
They'll never go away

Excuses on the bookstore shelf
Blame everybody but herself
While Vlad's collusion she may call
She really has no proof at all

A madman with atomic toys
Apocalypse--or merely noise?
Contrived distractions we adore
A country we may have no more
The hit version on youtube has nine stanzas. The printed lyrics show ten. I went with the printed version.

So is this someone else's work, Patrick. Or did you do it?

I wrote it after my brother and I saw Judy Collins on a TV show. He sometimes gives me ideas. But this one is all mine.
