Super Long Pop Songs:

"The Bonny Swans" Length: 7:18
"The Bonny Swans," which the Canadian-born Celtic singer-harpist Loreena McKennitt recorded for and released on her album "The Mask And Mirror," is her interpretation of the Celtic folk tale called "The Twa Sisters," also called "The Cruel Sister" and "Two Sisters." Her full-length version of the selection spans seven minutes and eighteen seconds in toto; the version that was edited for radio consumes four minutes and fifty-seven seconds. Its lyrics are essentially a murder ballad. These re-tell the story of one of at least two farmer's daughters, whose sister cruelly drowns her for the sake of a man, only to have her corpse transmuted to a swan, then be reconstructed to become a harp--one that eventually plays without human intervention and, in so playing, reveals the other sister's crime.
