Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Frankie Avalon

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Frankie Avalon's, "Venus"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Rowena
The Real Lyrics:
Oh, Venus
The Story: I had heard the song back to the 50s, but it wasn't until I saw the name Rowena--a girl who graduated from my high school in 1965, two years ahead of me--that I made a connection, so to speak, between Avalon's lyrics and the girl's name. But after listening closely to the song I realized it was 'Oh, Venus,' and not 'Rowena.' - Submitted by: Doug Montgomery
Frankie Avalon's, "Venus"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Venus, if you will
Please send a little girl for me to kill.
The Real Lyrics:
Venus, if you will
Please send a little girl for me to thrill.
The Story: When I first heard this (on the radio), the line sounded to me like the misheard version above. I listened closely to the rest of the song to see if that could possibly be right. But killing the girl certainly didn't seem to fit the rest of the song. Since I heard it on the radio, I didn't have a chance to know just when I might hear it again. I asked several people if they knew of the song. Finally one friend told me he knew it and the line was 'a little girl for me to THRILL'. He had it on a CD and later played it for me. Listening closely, I was convinced that he was right, and relieved that the song was about wanting to thrill, not kill, a girl. - Submitted by: Amber Malone
