Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Doors

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

L.A. Woman album at Amazon.com
The Doors', "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We've lost our good old mantra
The Real Lyrics:
We've lost our good old mama
The Story: I always heard mantra until I listened to it today (10/28/18) and heard mama while also reading the lyrics. I also remember reading mantra before. This must be a case of the MANDELA EFFECT... - Submitted by: Brandon Amezquita
The Doors', "Back Door Man"
The Misheard Lyrics:
'Elow your peep-hole and tyin' the sleeve
I'm half-Jamaican with my midnight treat, yeah.
The Real Lyrics:
Hello, y’all people that tryin' to sleep
I'm out to make it with my midnight dream, yeah.
The Story: I don't know why I never noticed it before, but it's clear (or unclear) as day. And here I thought the line about the chicken-eating was the only funny line in the song... I was wrong. lol - Submitted by: Bryan Womack
The Doors', "Break On Through"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Break off news to the other side.
The Real Lyrics:
Break on through to the other side.
The Story: I didn't know it was wrong until I roomed with a Doors freak in college. - Submitted by: Jeff Templon
The Doors', "Break On Through"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You know the day destroys the night
Ninety vibes a day.
The Real Lyrics:
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day.
The Story: I saw this one graffitied on a wall in six-inch high letters. How embarrassing to be so publically wrong. - Submitted by: Tim James
The Doors', "Break on Through (To the Other Side)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Davis Strait deep and wide
The Real Lyrics:
The gate is straight, deep, and wide
The Story: The Davis Strait is a northern arm of the Labrador Sea. It lies between mid-western Greenland and Nunavut. - Submitted by: Giselle
The Doors', "Easy Ride"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Pass the remote control
The Real Lyrics:
costume of control
The Story: My brother thought these were the words. If you listen to the song with this in mind, you'll hear it clear as a bell. - Submitted by: Jim
The Doors', "Hello, I Love You"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Do you hope to dust this dusky jewel?
The Real Lyrics:
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?
The Story: How does pluck a dusky jewel make any sense? I think my lyrics are better! You can pluck that jewel if you like ....but I want to dust that jewel off and polish it up. What do you say Morrison?. You want to admit my lyrics are better? I could be wrong. Even Geniuses make mistakes after all....... - Submitted by: Jim The Sandman
The Doors', "Hello, I Love You"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Do you hope to plug this dusty tool?
The Real Lyrics:
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?
The Story: i thought that, in the song, he was just bemoaning the fact that he wasn't getting anywhere with this haughty girl. Thus, his 'tool' was dusty due to lack of use. I only realized the correct lyrics after reading them somewhere. - Submitted by: Paul
The Doors', "Hello, I Love You"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your bed.
The Real Lyrics:
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game.
The Story: I had gotten this record on Christmas Day. I was playing it for the first time, when my dad came up and yelled at me for listening to 'immoral' music. It was he who thought that Jim Morrison was singing 'Let me jump in your bed'. Even telling him what the correct lyrics were didn't really change his mind about the 'evil' record. - Submitted by: Arnequis
The Doors', "L.A. Woman"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Ask any lady
To give up her house.
The Real Lyrics:
Passionate lady
Give up your vows.
The Story: 20 yrs. ago when we were in highschool, my buddy Carl turned me on to the Doors. While listening to the album during a party at his house one night, a very serious look came over his face. He looked down towards the floor, with an expression of deep serious thought. (Perhaps envisioning himself on stage at that very moment, lol!) He then belted out the misheard lyric in a voice that rang out through the house. - Submitted by: J. Schmitt
The Doors', "L.A. Woman"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Derkerderkerderker 'bout an hour ago!
The Real Lyrics:
Well, I just got into town about an hour ago.
The Story: My cousin and I were listening to my recently bought Doors CD. When this song came on, we laughed for about an hour! I think he was drunk off his a** when he sang this! It just sounds like angry drunken rambling. - Submitted by: Cherry Peery

Is the Mojo Risin?
The Real Lyrics:
Mr. Mojo Risin'
The Story: I swear I keep hearing the wrong thing. My Father hears it right and I hear it wrong - Submitted by: Cyclone
The Doors', "L.A. Woman"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Well I dig an anodyne about an hour ago.
The Real Lyrics:
Well I just got into town about an hour ago.
The Story: The official line is obviously incorrect (changed to be politically correct). The lyrics refer to some drug he dig. Anodyne is synonymous to painkiller. I hear something like "dig a leenodyne", but anodyne is what makes more sense. - Submitted by: paivalr
The Doors', "L.A. Woman"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Well, I did a little "dot" about an hour ago.
The Real Lyrics:
Well, I just got into town about an hour ago.
The Story: Nope, I'm right, he's talking about tripping on acid called purple micro dot, good grief, listen to the lyrics.... - Submitted by: debi daly
The Doors', "L.A. Woman"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Well, I did a little drug about an hour ago
The Real Lyrics:
Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
The Story: It is truly amazing that L.A. Woman is one of the best Doors albums, even though Jim Morrison was drugged out, screwed up the lyrics, and didn't want to do retakes. - Submitted by: Jeffrey Kasten
The Doors', "Light My Fire"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And our love become a funeral empire

The Story: I was playing the song on my guitar and singing it to my dad when I got that verse he started laughing & called all my family (it was a get-togethor) and told me to repeat that verse, so I did & my whole family just cracked up. Finally after everyone left my mom told me the real verse - Submitted by: april
The Doors', "Light My Fire"
The Misheard Lyrics:
shine a certain light on fire
The Real Lyrics:
try to set the night on fire
The Story: I originally heard the lyrics as sung by Jim Morrison to be "shine a certain light on fire"...I would swear that's what it was...until I heard Jose Feliciano's version (at the time, I thought he was the author of the song, and the Doors were just covering him), then I realized what it really was. - Submitted by: Frank

The Misheard Lyrics:
Of a deep blue dream
Seven horses sea
QB on the mark
The Real Lyrics:
Of a deep blue dream
Seven horses seem
To be on the mark
The Story: I thought somehow they changed the last word between deep blue sea and the next line but “seven horses dream” still doesn't make sense. - Submitted by: Chris

The Misheard Lyrics:
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house were born
Into this world of dawn
Like a dog without a bone
An actor on a loan
Riders on the storm
There's a killer on the roam
His brain's a-squirmin' like a stone
Taykay lon halidae
Let your children play
If ya give this man a rise
Sweet Ann-Marie'll die
Killer on the roam, yeah.
The Real Lyrics:
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we're born
Into this world we're thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm
There's a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin' like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah.
The Story: As kids my sister and I stayed up until about 5 in the morning on Saturday trying to decipher this song, particulary the 'take a long holiday,' part. Finally we made up a word. I never knew what was actually said until one day, probably more than ten years later, I was singing the song and just suddenly understood what the words really were. It was like an ephipany. - Submitted by: Jenny

The Real Lyrics:
Give this man a ride, sweet family will die
The Story: I was listening to Rockline on 93.7 (Houston, TX) the night they interviewed Robby Krieger and John Densmore of the Doors. This guy called in and wanted to know who 'Emily' was in 'Riders on the Storm'. Robby said it's sweet FAMILY, not EMILY! The guy kept talking about Emily, who was she, was she a friend of the band, etc. Robby explained that the song was about a psycho killer. The whole exchange was hilarious! - Submitted by: Sondee

Probably the most embarrassing moment of my life, given my sensitivity at that age and my desire to impress my girlfriend and especially the older guy. - Submitted by: Bradley Steffens
