Do you know why a band picked out it's name? Feel free to let us know.
I can't verify all of these stories, so do take them with a grain of salt. I try and delete the ones that I know to be bogus, but I don't know the origins of every band name (and some bands intentionally tell different stories about picking their band name).
There are 4772 Band Name Origin entries on the site.

X | According to John Doe in "The Unheard Music," X's bassist/male singer happened upon the demolition of an Ex-Lax plant, and asked someone on the crew if he could take home one of the big "X" signs which once stood atop the plant. It sat in his apartment until it was time to name a band. | Roderick
X-5 (Xenos 5) | 'XENOS', is an allomorph for the Greek word of 'stranger', where the name 'X-5' (referring to 5 Xenos), originated from. This means they are not ordinary and their group's color is unique and different. | Robert D. Arndt Jr.
X-ina | This is an affectionate nickname for Christina Agulaira.(like X-mas is Christmas) | Toon_Angel
X-Japan | The band was originally named X, but when they hit it big with a record deal there was already a band called X. So they added Japan at the end | Vince
X-mal Deutschland | This German proto-goth band chose their name due to the fact that there were two Germanys at the time. In German math jargon, xmal equates to the English "n times..." | Roderick
The X-Ray Men | The X-Ray Men are all ex-Wray men, meaning all three played with the late Link Wray. They now play Link material without the Rumble Man himself. As a tribute, and for hi-octane r&r fun. | Eric
Xiu Xiu | from the 1998 Chinese film "Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl" | Robert D. Arndt Jr.
XTC | Andy Partridge has also stated that part of the inspiration for the band's name cam from watching a Jimmy Durante movie, when his character stands up and says "Dat's it! I'm in ecstasy!" They spelled in out the way it sounded when he pronounced it. | Entil'Zha
XTC | Andy got the initial inspiration from a Jimmy Durante film wherein Durante exclaims, "I am in ECS-T-SY!" and it sounded like three letters. | Peter P.
XTC | XTC, when pronounced, sounds like the word ecstasy. However, it has nothing to do with the drug. (XTC was formed in 1977, while the drug was invented in the 80s.) Andy Partridge: "We chose XTC because we thought it would be a marvelously easy thing to see in print. Which it is -- people always do put it in capitals -- they're forced to give us respect! It was kind of like the music, short and sharp and hopefully with no unnecessary crap in it." | Mr. Bun
Xymox/Clan Of Xymox | Same band, same origin, comes from the word Zymotic, meaning The process of infection. | Bobo |
