The Lyrics
This one is controversial, I know, but it's the closest I will ever come to telling my life story in song, and besides, this is supposed to be a free country. You might think it's about abortion, but it isn't. Actually, it's about what our schools call social (or psychological) bullying, and the fact that "liberated" women can be just as guilty of prejudice and hate as white male racists. Prejudice is WRONG regardless of who it is directed against, and THAT is the real point of this parody (yes, some parodies can be quite serious). So, without further ado....
I remember standing outside the clinics
protesting something I didn't think was fair
It ruined any chance I had of finding love
young women dissed me everywhere
At a restaurant the waitresses would go around the room
and give hugs to everyone except me
I was pro-life, when pro-life wasn't cool
I was 34 when I had my first girlfriend
I guess it shouldn't surprise me, with all the prejudice in our nation
Most of the young women thought I was obtuse
All they gave me was rejection and verbal abuse

Michael, you have expressed your point of view very well. You are correct that the topic is controversial, so I am surprised the parody doesn't have more votes and more comments. I happen to be pro-choice although I think that 99.9% of the time the best choice is to allow the fetus to live. But I have a lot of respect for conscientious pro-life people who express themselves well.
Thanks for your comments :) I like it when people on one side of an issue can be fair and objective in evalutaing something which expresses the opposite view. In fact, that's really the point of the song, that we should treat one another as people despite our different beliefs. An example I like to use is that I often do not agree with the political views of Peter, Paul and Mary, but I still like a lot of their songs.
Michael, Great write and well put. Although I respect John's views on the subject I just wonder why it is that pro choice folks call the unborn human a fetus and pro life folks call the same unborn human a baby?
Don't know the song but fives anyway; it's well written and may have taken some nerve. John, your view of this issue looks pretty much identical to mine. Guy, I looked up "fetus" in the dictionary, and I got some bad news for ya. ; )
Here's the way I think about it. If we cannot be sure whether life begins at conception, birth, or somewhere in between, then it behooves the government to ask this question: which is the greater crime, to kill that which is already a living human, or to give legal protection to that which is soon to become a living human? If the exact beginning of life cannot be known, imo it is better to err on the side of granting legal protection to the unborn child. Once again, I am glad to see people on the other side of the issue who can separate music from politics. I promise to do the same.
Claude - My point was that no one refers to a cuddly little baby with such a generic term as fetus. It seems like the term lends itself somehow to the fact that the 'intruder' is not human.
As an adoptee, who once sang an anti-abortion song for 45 minutes outside a Barbara Boxer - Diane Feinstein rally (the entire crowd was treated to the rocking "Abortion Kills, Baby" as they made their way to the parking lot) - I applaud you for your effort. Couldn't give you a 5 for "funny", I know you'll understand.
