The Lyrics

Main Street, once the center of downtown action in my hometown of Buffalo, New York, is now dead as a doornail after 6 PM and on weekends unless a special event like a concert or play is going on. That's because Buffalo has no effective long-term planning. Therefore, nearly every proposed development project during the past several years has resulted in a war over whether, where, who, and when, no matter if the project is large or small; if it's housing for the poor, the middle-class or the rich; if it's a convention center, a gambling joint, a new bridge, restoration of an old building or construction of a new one; or if it's about access to the city's mostly inaccessible waterfront or reclamation of some of the city's destroyed parkland. Hardly anything happens here without a struggle, and often the struggle is so debilitating that nothing happens at all. As our county is in the midst of its greatest fiscal crisis, resulting in many cutbacks of services, this is my tribute to my childhood memories of how great Main Street was and its subsequent demise as I become another year older.
I'm walkin' down Main Street,
The one-time hub downtown Buffalo.
Now it's not so neat,
But it's home to me and I walk alone.

I'm walkin' down Main Street,
Or the Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
After 6, it sleeps,
And I'm here by myself and I walk alone.

I walk alone,
I walk alone.

I walk alone,
I walk a

Department stores there have gone out of business.
The Metro Rail's the only thing that moves there.
This town's seen better days so worth remembering;
That's why I walk alone.

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Aaah-ah,
Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah.

I'm walkin' down the street
That contrasts our fair city from the ‘burbs.
Politicians beat,
Elected jerks get in
And I walk alone.

Leglislators took
What's messed up and made things even worse.
What a bunch of crooks!
They left us high and dry and I walk alone.

I walk alone,
I walk alone.

I walk alone,
I walk a

The (Buffalo mayor) Masiello administration's screwed,
(Erie County Executive) Giambra's misappropriated budget,
Our government needs a great deal of fine-tuning;
‘Til then I walk alone.

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Aaah-ah,
Ah-ah, Ah-ah.

I walk alone,
I walk a

I'm walkin' down Main Street,
Or the Boulevard of Broken Dreams,
Where my memories creep,
Then I wake up again and I walk a

A thief is the only one that walks beside me.
My taxes are the only things increasing.
I wish this street had fulfilled dreams, not nightmares!
‘Til then I walk alone.

(Loud guitar solo and yelling of “Take me away!”)

Did a version of this song myself, so I had to check it out. Nice job, although I'll have to cancel that trip to Buffalo I had planned
